e-Book Publishing

By Paul Jerard, E-RYT 500

Do you have a Yoga book compiled or are you considering writing one? Have you ever wondered about how you could get your book published? Are you unsure of the steps to take in writing a Yoga book?

The first thing you should know is that publishing “on demand” is much easier than it ever has been in the past. It is possible to have your work self-published for a short run of 25 copies, for example.

If you hire an agent, you should be aware that you may give up your rights for distributing your work. For example: You may be required to sign into a contract, where the publisher has complete control over the distribution of your books.

There is a big difference between signing a contract with a major publishing house and signing a contract with a self-publishing distributor. Yet, either way, you will be expected to market your book. Most authors are not aware of how much marketing and promoting is involved, after the book is written.

Many authors hire an agent. This is great if the agent is reputable and has solid relationships with the “powers that be” inside the major publishing houses. Your agent may be able to get you book signings and speaking engagements. However, you will still need to promote your book.

In contrast, selling an e-Book, online, has its rewards; but self-promotion is a must. For example: I promote my Yoga e-Books, and any guest authors’ e-Books, on my site; but I encourage you to open a web site or Blog to develop a presence of your own and to sell your book.

The fact is – most people do not know that the average author makes between 5-15%, in Royalties, off the sale of books. Many authors work another full-time job because writing fails to produce adequate income. This will not stop new authors from writing the next best seller, but not every book will make the best seller list.

If you are considering writing a Yoga book, I would encourage you to write articles related to Yoga online. You could add your book title to your bio at the bottom of the article, so that readers know where to buy your book.

Here are some questions to consider:

How many pages are in your book?

How extensive will your editing be?

Would you consider becoming a guest author in a Yoga newsletter?

Do you have any digital artwork for your book?

Do you have a prepared summary or book review, giving the details and benefits of your book?

You would need to write a book review for an online shopping cart.
