I have been teaching yoga to adolescent in-patients at the psychiatric hospital where I work, for about 5 years now. It is a challenge because the dynamics of the groups and the individual needs of my patients is constantly changing. Even though some of the kids are reluctant to try yoga at first, after a while they want to do more and more! It's been really good for them and has been a GREAT learning experience for me!!!
Great article----thanks so much for sharing!

I really enjoyed reading your article which completely confirms my experience. I have been teaching Yoga to adults for a few years and recently was talked into teaching a home schooled group of kids between 8 and 12 years old. It has been a wonderful experience, the kids participate with enthusiasm, have fun and I enjoy the teaching very much. That there will be positive effects for all of us is definite!

Robin,

I couldn't agree with you more! My children did yoga since they were in my belly. And before they moved they watched me, so going to mama baby was a natural, and my twins do headstands and beautiful poses at age 4. It helps them on the playground, in their tumbling class, and at school. They know to sit and breathe when they are mad or bored in the car and want to sleep.

Last year I was certified to teach and I've been teaching adults and kids--and teaching kids and teens is wonderful. My one child does not like her mother teaching classes with other kids, but the other participates wonderfully, enjoying the position of experience she holds.

Yoga has been a gift for them, and a gift for me as a single mother facing many challenges. And a gift for the 3 of us as a way to spend bonding time that helps us grow and grow closer.

best, jillana
