PRANA VIDYA Part I

WHAT IS PRANA VIDYA?

Prana Vidya is a science and manipulation of energy. This physical body is a storehouse of Pranic energy, a dynamo, with infinite types of electrical currents passing throughout. We see this body as a combination of flesh, blood, and bones. For most people, Prana means breath, oxygen, ions, and so on; but the Prana of the body is more subtle than the nucleus of an atom. We have not yet been able to harness it. The great Yogis and scientists have seen a great force behind this physical body. Scientists are discovering the energy link between the physical and psychic bodies. They have arrived at the conclusion that energy, or Pranic force is convertible into material force, and material force is convertible into Pranic force.

You know the famous equation of Einstein: E = mc2 – that is, matter is energy in its potential state. There is a small scientific experiment, which we can use to illustrate this more clearly. If you look at a piece of bone with your naked eye, all you see is a bone. However, if you look at the same piece of bone under a super microscope, what do you see? First, you see molecules, then atoms, and later, the nucleus of the atom. Ultimately, you discover the fantastic behavior of energy.

The piece of bone, which appeared to be dead matter, was not really dead at all; only, our eyes were incapable of detecting the energy within it. Scientists, who have gone into the study of energy fields, maintain that the so-called “dead matter” is also permeated with Pranic energy. Therefore, Prana does not only mean life; it means existence, as well. The etymological meaning of Prana is ‘life in existence.’ Where there is mobility and stability combined, there is Prana. If an object is devoid of Prana, it will disintegrate.

HOW THE DISTRIBUTION OF ENERGY WORKS

Each and every fiber of the body is connected with this Pranic current through a complex system of energy channels, or flows, known as Nadis. The Nadis have been researched, and their function can be compared to that of an electrical system. Energy is distributed in our physical body, in the same way as the electrical system distributes energy from the generating station to your room.

Mooladhara Chakra is the generating station. From here, the energy is distributed through three high tension wires – Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna Nadis, to the various Chakra points, or substations, situated along the spine. From the Chakra points, the energy is distributed through the main poles, or major Nadis, to the different organs and parts of the body. From the major Nadis, another distribution takes place through thousands of minor Nadis, which carry the energy to each and every cell of the body.

become a yoga teacherWhere there is no electricity, there is no light; where there is no energy, there is no life. You know what happens when there is a short circuit in the electrical system – the lights go off for a minute. Sometimes, due to overload, the voltage falls very low and all the lights go dim. It is the same way in this physical body, also; the Prana Shakti sometimes undergoes a lot of alterations and depressions. From the different Chakras, Prana is distributed to all the major organs and parts of the body. At some stage, there is an excess of energy, and at other times, there is an energy drop. Everyone has experienced energy loss from time to time. Some people frequently enter into states of depression, in which their energy is so low, that everything appears miserable and clouded, and they do not like anything. Sometimes, although the major Nadis are conducting Prana, there is a failure in the minor Nadis. Then, the body does not work properly. Major disturbance, blockage, or imbalance in the energy channels, results in what is termed in medical language as a ‘nervous breakdown.’ So, all these conditions of depression, breakdown, energy blockage, excessive energy, etc., are due to the various states of Pranic energy.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PSYCHOSOMATIC & SOMATO-PSYCHIC APPROACH

Many people say that all diseases are created in the mind. This is correct, but not in the absolute sense. The origin of disease is not only in the mind, it is in the body, as well. Many diseases originate in the mind and travel into the body. They are known as psychosomatic diseases. When diseases originate in the body, and travel into the mind, they are known as somato-psychic diseases. Body is the base, and Prana is the force. We know that the body and mind cannot exist without Prana. Therefore, in Hatha Yoga, as well as in Tantra Yoga, we talk about somato-psychic illness; and when we supply Prana to the different parts of the body, we are treating this type of illness. I have seen people getting better by practicing Hatha Yoga, Pranayama, and other techniques.

Following are some of the examples:

Prana is the base of human health and illness. Even a psychological illness can be treated by supplying Prana. Therefore, in Yoga, the hypothesis is that all diseases are caused by improper distribution of Prana in the physical body. Even those diseases, which are regarded as psychological in nature, are actually caused by an imbalance in the Pranic distribution.

For example – Vishuddhi Chakra is one of the main distribution stations. It is situated at the junction in the neck, and the Pranas are distributed from Vishuddhi to different parts of that area- ears, eyes, nose, throat, thyroid, parathyroid, thymus, etc. If there is improper distribution of Prana to the thyroid, emotional diseases occur. So, many emotional complexes, which we are suffering from, are directly caused by hypothyroid or hyperthyroid, and this condition results from improper distribution of Prana from Vishuddhi Chakra. An emotional problem, arising from improper distribution of Prana in the thyroid complex, should be termed as somato-psychic, not psycho-somatic.

For a second example, let us consider Manipura Chakra, behind the navel. This is the main distributing centre for the digestive system and the adrenal glands. As you know, the adrenals produce the hormone adrenaline. If there is an improper distribution of Prana from Manipura Chakra, to the adrenal glands, you will suffer from fear-psychosis, colitis, and other somatic diseases.

The third example is a very important one. Swadhisthana Chakra, located at the coccyx, is the distributing station for all the uro – genital organs, except the testicles. These include the uterus, ovaries, kidney and bladder, and urinary organ. Now, if improper distribution of Prana takes place, or excess energy is used by these particular organs of the body, then you will have the problems of this centre. Sometimes, people who are suffering from frigidity or impotence go to the doctor, who immediately tells them, ‘You have a psychological problem. Something from your childhood is affecting you.’ I don’t entirely disagree with this theory. Our childhood experiences do have an influence on our present behavior patterns, but you must remember that any type of frigidity or impotence is not psycho-somatic, it is somato-psychic.

HOW DOES TRANMISSION OF PRANA OCCUR

yoga instructor trainingTransmission of Prana is a natural occurrence, which takes place all the time, consciously as well as unconsciously. If there is an excess of Prana anywhere, with this science, you can balance it. If there is a disease, caused by lack of Prana Shakti, then an excess of Prana from another area is supplied to the affected part of the body. This is done by converting Prana into magnetic energy and then into a flow of psychic energy. When Prana has been converted into magnetic energy, it can also be transmitted outside of the body through your fingers, a look, or a thought. It can be transported by a flower. It can also be used to charge an object, like a Mala, just as you charge your car battery with electric wires.

The science of Prana Vidya is designed to facilitate the proper distribution of Prana throughout the whole body. Scientists have seen that the energy of the human body flows outward and inward. Vibrations or energy charges are constantly being emitted from every physical body. Some people have long, strong Pranic radiations, while others have short feeble radiations. Research with Kirlian photography has verified this hypothesis of Pranic energy.

Prana is very subtle and can only be felt by the psychic body. Sensitive people can feel it, and those who are healers by nature are born with this faculty, with their Pranamaya Kosha manifesting predominantly. Though they have not learned this science from any Guru or books, these people are capable of healing the sick. Often, they themselves are surprised at their own powers and wonder where they came from and how they work. Of course, most people are not born healers, but many are capable of developing this potential to some degree through the practice of Prana Vidya. This technique, not only opens up your awareness to the vast stores of energy within the human body, but it also teaches you how to consciously manipulate them for the improvement of your own health, and that of others.

CHANNEL OF RAISING AND DISTRIBUTING THE PRANA

In the practice of Prana Vidya, the channel used for raising the Prana is Pingala Nadi, which in modern science can be correlated with the sympathetic nervous system. Pingala emanates from Mooladhara Chakra, at the base of the spine. It curves right and left, crossing over at all the major Chakra points. Finally, it terminates at Ajna Chakra, where the energy is collected and stored for distribution. In order to practice Prana Vidya, one must have a good understanding of Pingala Nadi.

Before beginning the practice, if there is an energy block anywhere in the body, this must be cleared first by practicing Yogasanas. The Energy Block Postures series (Read my article Yogic Home Work) is particularly important for clearing the energy blocks in the body. Next, you must perfect Ujjayi Pranayama and become familiar with all the Chakra points. Most of the Chakras are fairly easy to locate because they are associated with points which we can directly feel. Chakra points are the following:

• Mooladhara- perineum

• Swadhisthana- coccyx

• Manipura- behind the navel

• Anahata- behind the sternum

• Vishuddhi- behind the throat pit

• Ajna is the most difficult to locate. It is situated at the pineal gland, right at the top of the spinal cord in the Medulla Oblongata. If you look at a book on anatomy, you will see where it is, but if you try to locate it mentally, you won’t be able to find it. So, we have a very simple practice for this.

Close your eyes and concentrate on the eyebrow centre. If you are able to visualize a dot, bindu, or star at this point, then you can skip over the next stage of this practice. If you are not able to visualize anything there, apply a dab of balm at the eyebrow centre. In a few seconds, you will feel some sensations there, which will help you to locate the bindu or star.

When you are able to visualize the bindu, practice moving it backward to Ajna, and forward to the eyebrow centre, with the help of Ujjayi Pranayama. Feel that you are breathing back and forth. When this practice has been established, and you are able to locate all the Chakras, you must develop a clear mental image of Pingala Nadi.

Remember that Pingala Nadi does not go straight up to Ajna. It moves in absolutely symmetrical curves. Starting from Mooladhara, Pingala curves to the right and crosses back over at Swadhisthana. Then, it curves to the left and crosses at Manipura, to the right, and crosses at Anahata, to the left, and crosses at Vishuddhi. Finally, it curves to the right and terminates at Ajna. The path is easier to remember if you keep in mind that the first and last curves are always to the right.

Once you have a clear image of Pingala passage, you are ready to begin raising the Prana. Inhale in Ujjayi, and move up through the curves and Chakras, from Mooladhara to Ajna. Exhale in Ujjayi, and move back down the same route to Mooladhara. Inhale while ascending, and exhale while descending. The color of Pingala Nadi is red. So, as you inhale and exhale, imagine that you are travelling along a red path. At the end of each inhalation, practice Kumbhaka (breath retention) at Ajna Chakra. After forty rounds, distribute the energy to the affected part.

The distribution of Prana Shakti, to the affected part, is a very complicated process, because you have to know how the particular part is connected with Ajna Chakra. Supposing you have pain in the knee – you have to supply Prana to that part from Ajna Chakra. This supply of Prana, to that affected part, has to be done with a very subtle type of Ujjayi. Each inspiration has to be so subtle that it can last for about a minute; but you have to know the exact physiological and Yogic pathways from Ajna Chakra to the affected part in the knee.

There are so many pathways. You have to find the correct one, and when you have discovered it, circulate your Prana from Ajna Chakra to the affected part. Direct the charged Prana, until you feel strong sensations of heat and melting, and a type of magnetic presence in that particular part of the body. First, you have to try for yourself, then – you can try for others, as well.

The Seven Chakra System

There are many different beliefs concerning chakras. Some Yoga teacher training courses will state there are eight major chakras, and some say there are seven major chakras.  Chakras have been known since the beginning of ancient Indian metaphysics.  They are nerve centers along the spine and in the head.  Each chakra is said to have special energies that can be balanced, cleansed, or awakened through a variety of Yogic methods.

The first is the root chakra found at the base of the spine. It is concerned with being grounded or anchored and its purpose is self-preservation. The second chakra sited at the pelvic centre translates from the Sanskrit as; ‘ones own place.’ This chakra is concerned with movement and flow and pleasure is the motivating factor. The third chakra located at the solar plexus is known as the power chakra. It is concerned with energy and the strength of a person’s will.

The fourth chakra is located at the heart and translates as: ‘unstuck or unhurt’ its purpose is relationships, self-love and balance. The fifth chakra is located at the throat and is named ‘purification’ its purpose is communication and creativity and is concerned with self-expression. The sixth chakra translates as ‘perceive and command’ and is located at the brow.

Its purpose is intuition and insight and includes clarity, vision and imagination. The seventh chakra is named: ‘thousand fold’ and is located at the crown of the head. Its purpose is understanding, and unity with the divine and is concerned with the spiritual connection, understanding and intelligence.

The seven main chakras can be summarized as follows:

Muladhara - The Base Chakra

Mudladhara Chakra Root Center located at the base of the spine, between anus and genitals. governs the excretory system, skeletal system, sense of smell, legs, cervix.

Svadhisthana - The Sacral Chakra





Swadhistana Chakra Pelvic Center located at the genitals, governs urinary system and reproductive system and organs.

Manipura - The Solar Plexus Chakra

Manipura Chakra Solar Plexus center located at the navel or solar plexus, governs adrenal glands,digestive system, sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.

Anahata - The Heart Chakra

Anahata Chakra Heart Centre located at the heart governs cardiovascular system, respiratory system, muscular system, spleen, skin, upper back, hands and arms.

Vishuddha - The Throat Chakra

Vishuddha Chakra Throat Center located at the throat, governs the thyroid and functions of the throat.

Ajna - The Brow Chakra

Ajna Chakra Brow centre located between the eyebrows governs the pineal gland nervous system, pituitary gland.

Sahasrara - The Crown Chakra

Sahasrara Chakra crown chakra located at the crown of the head governs the brain.

Yoga as an Art of Living – Alleviate Stress

Yoga can help alleviate stress, give you some pleasure and enhance the objects you are working on, even when you are drown in a mountain of unfinished schedules and overwhelming paper works. All you need is a short break as a gateway.

In his book on “Ethics”, Aristotle studied “The relation of pleasure to activity”. He says that “each of the senses is active relatively to its object, and its activity is perfect when it is in good condition and is directed towards the highest object that falls within its range of sensation.” Thus in order to make an activity pleasurable and perfect we need firstly to improve the organ related to the sense so we can enjoy the best of it.

Therefore, fatigue, eyestrain, and body stress are responsible of lack of concentration because our body organs are tired and became less productive. Taking sometimes a short break may be rewarding for a better activity. The time we spent in concentrating and meditating on the source of our ailment could be a benefit afterwards. It is not at all a loss of time because we end up fixing, repairing, and boosting our centers of energies.

How yoga can help you become more effective in what you are doing and lead you to the best of it. The answer is simple: yoga improves your centers of energy and diffuses all the stress.

Hook to The Unique Zen Experience

Did you know that Indian people divide our body to 7 centers of energy, called chakras and each one has a color and a function connected to our organs , senses and hormones and we just have to diffuse this energy to optimize our health and energy?

1 – Root chakra: color red. It is located between the anus and the sex organs. Sense is smell.

2 – Navel chakra: color orange, located in the centre of the abdomen around your navel. Sense is taste.

3 – Solar plexus chakra: color yellow, located next to your thoracic cage. Sense is sight.

4 – Heart chakra: color emerald green, located at the center of your chest. Sense is touch.

5 – Throat chakra: color sky blue, located next to your thyroidal gland. Sense is hearing.

6 – Brow chakra: color dark blue, located between your eyebrows. Sense is inner sound.

7 – Crown chakra: color violet, located at center top of your head. Sense is inner light.

How can we reach our chakras while sitting on our desk?

It is simple. Take 7 minutes recreation from your work. Sit still, back straight, head light, arms along your body, hands gently crossed on your laps, feet flat on the ground, eyes focused on your breathing.

1 – Take a deep inhalation moving gently your breathing from your root chakra, up to your crown chakra on a count of seven.

Exhale in a soft way directing your gazes to your root chakra. Relax breathing evenly. Imagine yourself happy, smelling a red rose given by someone you love.

2 – Take the same deep breath and now exhale directing your gaze to your navel chakra. Imagine yourself tasting a juicy orange. Stimulate your tongue and enjoy it.

3 – Take the same deep breath and exhale Take the same deep breath and exhale to your solar plexus chakra. Breathe evenly, thinking of a warm yellow sun. Feel the heat and relax.

4 – Take the same deep breath and exhale to your heart chakra. Feel your heart beating. Imagine it shaped as a unique green emerald and moving under your fingers.

5 – Take the same deep breath and exhale to your throat chakra. Imagine yourself lying in the sun under a beautiful blue sky, listening to your favorite music.

6 – Take the same deep breath and exhale to your eyebrow chakra. Feel your inner sounds coming from your inner breathing.

7 – Take a deep breath to the count of 7, and exhale to the top of your head. Relax; breathe evenly imagining yourself in a violets garden where each flower has a different and unique perfume smell.

Feel the overwhelming happiness. Enjoy the moment. Shut your eyes for a moment and reach out for your dream.

Open your eyes slowly. Take a deep breath and go back to work.

An Inner Energy Vault Of The Human Body

The vault of the 3 types of energies viz. Satvika’s wisdom energy, Rajasa’s action energy and Tamasa’s material energy are present in Chakras. Gayatri helps awaken these subtle plexuses or Chakras:

Iccha shaktishcha bhuha karaha shaktirbhuvastatha.

Moola padmashcha bhurlo ko vishudhancha bhuvastatha.

Sur lokaha sahasra gayatri sthan nirnay.

Bhuha-desire power. Bhuvaha-action power. Swaha-wisdom energy. This is the nature of Bhurbhuvahaswa. Bhuha-Mooladhar Chandra, Bhulok. Bhuvaha-Vishusrav Chandra, Bhuvahalok. Swaha-Sahasrar Chandra, Surlok and is the area of Gayatri.

In the Merudand of a human being 6 Chakras predominate. Only via Gayatri meditation can these Chakras be activated, which in turn ooze with energies and Sidhis. Kundalini Super Energy situated in the Mooladhar Chakra has authority over these Chakras. This Kundalini is said to be Gayatri in nature. In the inner world of man 10 Pranas or vital force are present which radiate it. It is because of these 10 vital forces that one gains wisdom of the 10 Super Sciences. All these Sciences are dependent on Gayatri.

Kundalinya samadhbhuta gayatri pran dharini.

Pran vidya mahavidya yasyam vetti sa veda vit.

………………….. YOGA CHUDAMANI

MEANING: Gayatri is a conscious force which appears as Kundalini and which imbibes conscious vital force. Gayatri is verily Vital Force Science, it is a Super Science and he/she who knows this secret truly is a spiritual seer.

Mooladi brahmarandhranta geeyate mananadyata.

Manatat trait shatchakram gayatri tena kathayate.

MEANING: Right from Mooladhar Chakra to Brahmarandhra the 6 Chakras open up because of devotion to Gayatri.

The human body is an infinite vault of gross and subtle energies but it is wasted because of unwanted thoughts and activities of the external world. If this wastage is obstructed and the thoughts are introverted and if they work in the inner world only then definitely intense inner power is attained. See the following:

Bahirmukhasya mantrasya vrittayo ya prakeertitaha.

Ta evantarmukhasthasya shaktiyaha parikeertitaha.

MEANING: When the psyche is extroverted it is called thought waves and when they are introverted it is called Shakti or energy.

THE TEN SUPER SCIENCES OF THE INNER WORLD:

A very widespread science of the inner world exists. They are in the form of 10 sciences and are classified in 10 ways. In Vedic literature these have been amply detailed.

1.UDGITHA SCIENCE

2. SANVARNA SCIENCE

3. MADHU SCIENCE

4. PANCHAGNI SCIENCE

5. UPAKOSHAL SCIENCE

6. SHANDILYA SCIENCE

7. DAHAR SCIENCE

8. BHUMA SCIENCE

9. MANDHA SCIENCE

10. DEERGHAYUSHYA SCIENCE.

These 10 sciences were the wealth of Rishis of yore. Via this wealth despite lack of hoarding of material wealth they were as rich as Lord of Wealth called Kubera. They attained whatever the demigods had despite being in a human garb and in this material world.

In the Tantra path these very 10 sciences can be found albeit under different names. Despite the fact that demonic Vam path Tantra methods differ from Dakshin path’s Vedic methodology yet with their help too these Sidhis can be attained. In the Tantra Path the 10 sciences are called: 1. Indrani 2. Vaishnavi 3. Brahmani 4. Kaumari 5. Narsinhi 6. Varahi 7. Maheshwari 8. Bhairavi 9. Chandi and 10. Agneyi.

We cannot give detailed version of these 10 Super Sciences over here. If possible in future it will be detailed in the Akhand Jyoti magazine but just now it is enough to note that the 3 alphabets of Gayatri are akin to a spiritual tri fold union. Just as the material 3 fold union of Prayag Raj takes place when the 3 rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Sarawati unite so too when the great streams of Ida, Pingala and Sushumna present in the 3 alphabets of Gayatri unite the spiritual Triveni is formed. One accrues good merits on bathing in the Triveni river of Prayag but the super fruit attained on bathing in this Triveni river of Yoga is well nigh difficult to describe. It has been said that:

Ida bhodavati ganga pingala yamuna nadi.

Ida pingal yormadhye sushumna cha saraswati.

Ida is river Ganga and Pingala is river Yamuna. Sushumna which is between these 2 is called river Saraswati.

Triveni yogaha sa prokta tatra snanam mahafalam

This is the Triveni river of Yoga. A super result ensues on bathing in it.

What ever is present in the external gigantic cosmos or macrocosm is present in the body or microcosm. Whatever we attain in the external world can be attained within the body via spiritual practice or Sadhana. There is nothing in the external wrld which is lacking in the body.

Via spiritual practices those who master these inner Divine Powers use them akin to those scientists who after mastering steam etc energies via electric atom use it for benefiting mankind. In the material world there is energy which is materially potent. Similarly in the inner world it is seen as spiritual potency. The spiritual power of Gayatri manifests in a spiritual seeker as Sidhis. Such a person feels as though demigods and demons of the invisible world have appeared to serve him/her and are dying to take orders.

Yaksha rakshasa gandharva apsarogan kinnaraha.

Sevante charanam tasya sarvetasya vanshanugaha.

MEANING: He/she has mastered Yaksha, Rakshasa, Gandharva, Apsara, Kinnara etc are are serving his/her feet.

MATERIAL ENERGIES OF THE GROSS WORLD:

This very motherly element works in the world as atomic energy, gross/subtle vital force, sentiments etc. A description eulogizing it is as follows:

Parmanu swarupe cha dwayanukadi swarupini.

Sthulatitthula rupena jagadadhatri namostute.

Sukshmatisukshma rupe cha pranapanadi rupini.

Bhavanhavaswarupe cha jagadadhatri namostute.

……………… JAGADADHATRI STOTRA

MEANING: I bow down to atom manifest, atomic duo manifest, grosser than the gross, subtler than the subtlest, manifest as Prana/Apan/Vyan etc, manifest as seen/unseen and substratum of the world.

This material energy as per the 24 alphabets of Gayatri is of 24 types. Our ancient scientists or Rishis termed them 24 Matrikas. Their names are:

1. Chandrameshwari

2. Ajitabala

The current day scientists of material sciences have researched into the above in their own way. They call this power as ‘Energy of Force’. They have classified this power as heat power, electrical energy, energy of elasticity, energy of gravitation, energy of motion, kinetic energy, cosmic electricity, intelligence, super force etc and after knowing their characteristic and functioning they have invented/discovered many things.

Modern day scientists have also unearthed electrical energy tat works in our body. They have named them Audilic Force (Ojas), the light of fingers and eyes, Personal Magnetism etc. Dr Kilner has invented a machine called Oroscope with the help of which we can measure the number and amount of electrical energies of different types in the bodies of various human beings. This bodily electricity can be clearly experienced via subtle sight attained from Yoga practice. Great seers have described its form as follows:

Tadillekha tanvi tapan shashim vaishwanarmayo.

Tadillata samaruchirvidyullekheva bhaswati.

MEANING: This energy can be seen as lightning, moon on fire and like an inferno.

In Yoga scriptures millions of years back thousands of principles were unearthed that work in the inner region of the body. Even Modern Science has placed a few steps on this path and quite a few things have been discovered. According to them they have data pertaining to etheric body, mystic rose, solar plefisus, cardiac plexus, thyroid gland, pineal gland, pituitary body etc and opine that there is a direct correlation between the presence-absence of latent skills and special qualities via these special centers and their weakness or intensity. Yet they have failed to understand how to evolve these subtle centers which are beyond the realm of medicines, surgery etc. The answer and due guidance can be given only by Yoga scriptures which have been doing so, so far.

For the awakening of these subtle energy centers according to spiritual practice science the methodology of Bandha and Mudra are given in scriptures. These type of 24 practices are famous correlated to the 24 alphabets of Gayatri:

All these are meant for activating the subtle centers. Even via 84 Asanas or postures this aim can be achieved but it will take a while for Modern Science to understand all this. Yet one can hope that Modern Science will continue with its research and one day reach that very goal which our Rishis of yore have already attained.

In the second chapter of Yoga philosophy there is a description of the steps of Ashtanga Yoga practice. Those who perform the practice of non violence experience that even wild beasts like tigers etc give up their violent nature. If a person who performs the practice of speaking truth gives a boon or a curse, they definitely fructify. Those who never rob attain very valuable jewels etc. If we undergo Brahmacharya we become divinely radiant. If hoarding is overcome one attains wisdom of not only previous lifetimes but also of past, present and future. If purity of mind is imbibed we stop hating others and will not indulge in lewd relationships. Also one attains joy, focus, sense organ control and Self Realization. If one is always contented the best joy is attained. Due to penance when the dirt of psyche is warded off 8 bodily Sidhis are attained like Anima, Laghima, Mahima etc. Self study and that of scriptures leads to vision of ones chosen deity. Surrender to God leads to Samadhi or trance. If posture or Asana is mastered, one does not feel the pain of duality i.e. hot/cold, good/bad etc. Pranayama helps overcome sin and the veil of spiritual ignorance. Pratyahar helps master ones sense organs.

With the help of other types of spiritual practices other types of Sidhis can be attained. Yoga scriptures mention many Sidhis like Anima, Mahima, Laghima, Garima, Prapti, Prakamya, Ishitva, Vashitva, Doordarshan, Door Shravan, Parchitra Vijnana, Parkaya Pravesha, Akasharohan, Maran, Mhan, Ucchatan, Vashikaran etc. All these are possible via Gayatri practice too.

It is said that:

There are 3 paths of Yoga practices via Gayatri viz. Pippilika, Dadar and Vihangam. By walking on these paths 4 speeches are activated viz. Para, Pashyanti, Madhyama and Vaikhari. The 5 types of sorrows are overcome viz. ignorance, egoistic nature, attraction, repulsion and Abhinivesha. The 4 states of waking, dream, deep sleep and trance are purified. The 6 Chakras get activated viz. Mooladhar, Swadhishthan, Manipur, Anahat, Vishuddhi and Ajna. Also in the center of the brain lies the Sahasrar lotus whose divine light radiates. The movements in the 5 spaces viz. Akash, Mahakash, Parakash, Tattvakash and suryakash become more widespread. Via Gayatri a seeker performing Yoga practice gains victory over 9 obstacles viz. Vyadhi, Styan, Sanshay, Pramad, Alasya, Avirati, Bhranti, Alabdha Bhumika and Anavasthiti.

It is Super Energy Gayatri that controls the entire world. With the help of its authority every activity of the world takes place regularly. This has been described in the Kathopanishad as follows:

Bhayadasyagnistapati bhayattapasi suryaha.

Bhayadindrashcha vayushcha mrityurdhavati panchamaha.

MEANING: Its fear induces fire to burn, its fear induces sun to shine, its fear induces Indra, wind and Yama to run.

What can a devotee not attain on faithfully surrendering to such a super great Dvine Mother? He/she can attain everything as mentined in the Shrutis.

Gayatraya sarva sansiddhir dwijanam shruti samaja.

MEANING: Gayatri meditation can give you all Sidhis mentioned in the Vedas.

In spiritual literature for attaining success in devotion/meditation and in making our psyche conducive Gayatri devotion is said to be of extraordinary utility.

Sa gayatri samidhanyani cchandansi samidhe.

MEANING: When Gayatri awakens other Mantras get activated.

Initially light work is given and later when the capacity augments, heavy work is allocated. When Gayatri’s facile Japa chanting conjoins to correct devotional methodology a devotee is asked to simultaneously perform Yoga practice. When Yoga and austerities combine Gayatri becomes Kundalini or Divine Serpent Power. There is great importance attached to Gayatri practice combined with Yoga practice.

Lord Shiva says: O Parvati! Gayatri is austerities, it is Yoga, it is a practice, it is meditation. It is said to be the Mother of all Sidhis. Kundalini Awakening – Gayatri’s High Stature Penance

Kundalini practice is a high stature devotional method of Gayatri Meditation. The unveiling of the 5 sheaths or Koshas comes under the flagship of Gayatri’s 5 face practice. Its pinnacle is Kundalini practice. It is said to be the union of Gayatri and Savitri. When the material energy of Mooladhar Chakra unites with the divine awakening of Sahasrar its combination manifests such serenity of soul which is said to be the fulfillment of Yoga practice. Gayatri is Divine Science and Savitri is Energy Chandi. When both unite it is called Kundalini Awakening. It is also called Brahmavarchas. In Brahmavarchas practice Kundalini awakening to is included.

Within the science of spiritual practice the discussion of Kundalini predominates and it is elucidated as mind boggling and terrific divine energy. Before understanding the nature science of Kundalini and spiritual practice science it is most required that we know what this power/energy is? Where rest its roots or fount? What is the aim of its practice and via its endeavor how and what benefits occur?

Kundalini means round in shape. This entire cosmos is round in shape. Even the tiniest atom is round. Anyone can thus call cosmic existence or life existence as Kundalini. Planets, galaxies etc are round. The atoms of objects and cells of creatures are round. This roundness can be understood as Kundalini. This is but a gross standpoint but we must delve deeper. Planets, galaxies etc are moving all the while. They move in a particular orbit. They move ahead again and again in a round manner within their orbit. This orbit being round is Kundalini only. A creature is born, it grows, it dies and again repeats all this which can hence be termed Kundalini cycle. A snake sits in a circular manner. Hence it is generally used as comparison. The earth lies on the head of Shesha serpent. The demigod of space element is Anant super serpent. In this mythological belief it is the depiction of cosmos and state of earth. Patal or hell is called Shesha world. In the higher up Brahma world too lords Shesha. Lord Vishnu reclines on a serpent. Even in Shiva world serpents rule. They coil around Shiva’s body. Thus the worlds above and below earth, is lorded over by serpents. Via this analysis one gets a primary knowledge of the nature of Kundalini Energy.

What ever is in the macrocosm or the cosmos is there in the microcosm or the body. The brain is Brahmaloka and Mooladhar is Bhuloka. Both are lorded over by serpentine energy. In the brain the Sahasrar Chakra or 1000 headed super serpent is used as Lord Vishnu’s bed. The female serpent Kundalini is in the base of the genitals. A creature’s body is born from this area. The genitals of females are like a pyre. A subtle knot exists in the genitals of both males and females. By the name of Kand or Kunda it is detailed in spiritual texts. It is the residence of Kundalini Energy. It is compared to a sleeping female serpent. In reality it is an electrical flow which under ordinary circumstances is utilized for procreation purposes. It also creates energy for balance and advancement of a living being’s body. Matter is nothing but an evolved form of energy. The bodily organs are made of chemicals but at their roots it is nothing but manifestation of energy. It is energy that gets concentrated so as to become chemicals and other material forms. It is via the latter’s union that the body is designed. In a gist therefore the root principle of body creation is electrical energy. During sexual union due to friction this very electricity is created. As a result the sperm and ovum unite to form a baby. Certain bodily units are given credit for its movement, potentials and special qualities. Amongst them that generation wealth which is unveiled is but the reaction of conscious electricity. This vital electricity creates a cast which creates any body and helps in its sustenance. In this cast there is the united creation of body and psyche. In a gist vital electricity is called Kundalini which maintains existence of the bodies of living beings, its nature and also its future. Generally it pervades the entire body but if its center is to be unearthed it can be noted near the genitals in the form of a subtle center called Mooladhar Chakra.

The other end of Kundalini can be found in the Brahmarandhra of the brain and is consciousness based. Consciousness definitely pervades the entire body but its center of circulation is the brain. The knowledge based end of vital electricity is in the brain and its power based end is in the Mooladhar. Both are generally separate. Both fulfill only their limited goals. Separated, their energy is only that much that it can fulfill only the responsibility of that area. Thus only mundane daily life transactions can be carried out. If the 2 wires of electricity remain separated it is of no use but when they unite an intense electrical flow is noted. In the practice of Kundalini awakening both the ends of vital electricity are united. The miracle of this union is akin to the union of man and woman to create a family. In Kundalini awakening not only does unconsciousness end and consciousness augment but that there is union of 2 energy poles.

The earth’s axis is in the North Pole. From there it attracts, ‘buys’ required and useful things from the infinite storehouse of inter stellar powers. Over and above using whatever dirt remains is thrown into the South Pole. Ordinarily the pole that pulls things seems more important and the one that is thrown into seems useless. But this is not true. If there is no arrangement for throwing there would be no use of gathering things. If after a cow eats grass is not milked not only the udders but the entire body will suffer illness. If there is no excretion then the danger that accrues is equal to that of not feeling hungry at all. Everyone knows the gigantic amount of power required to launch a rocket in interstellar space. It is a great task to launch a rocket into space after overcoming earth’s gravitational pull. It can be done only in a space craft launching station which has immense energy for the task. Hence the importance lies in how much force is required to throw a ball at a certain distance. Everyone knows the importance of energy required for pulling. Everyone also knows the energy required to fill a pail of water from a well or unearthing ores, oil etc from mines. Thus from this elucidation we can understand the importance of the activities of North and South Pole and the nature of the intense potency used in these centers.

Planet earth has been compared to man’s physical body. In spiritual parlance it is called Bhuloka. The gigantic universes are called cosmos and the body is called earth. The same holds true for God and his creature. This similarity also holds true for the solar system and an atom. Within both same principles are at work and also similar activities exist. The same state exists as far as gigantic cosmic consciousness or God and human body is concerned. Earth is gigantic and the human body is its image. A living being is a portion of God and the body has imbibed the ways of planet earth.

It has been said before that the North Pole has been compared to the center of the brain and the South Pole to the genital organs. The center of the brain is called Brahmarandhra or Sahasrar. The genitals are called Mooladhar. Kundalini is that energy which on powerfully flowing between Mooladhar and Sahasrar can lead to union of a creature with God. Thus great potentials can accrue. But ordinarily this flow is very meager. Both ends use infinitesimal energy for their limited tasks. Generally the process of give and take is very minor.

The potential of Mooladhar is generally used for zest to procreate and generate capability to do so and thus its task is limited. Sahasrar too uses its capability merely for carrying out daily mundane transactions. Generally both poles experience tiredness while carrying out their limited tasks. This is the ordinary state. In order to change this situation special efforts called Kundalini awakening are carried out to generate high stature potential in these centers. A pile of mud can be kicked with the legs or pushed with the hands but if one wants to generate gigantic energy from an atom of the pile of mud, special means are required. The bodily centers of brain and genitals carry out their ordinary tasks. If a problem occurs in them, medicines are administered. If we wish to radiate and render high stature the hidden seed energy in these centers then instead of ordinary means, extraordinary ones are required. This extraordinary means is called Kundalini awakening.

It is said that Kundalini resides in the Mooladhar Chakra. It can be understood as vital energy, life force, creative inspiration, zest for life, enthusiasm etc. Its ceaseless effort creates required power and inspiration in all mundane goals of the body. Amongst them one is experienced as enthusiasm, sexual desire, sport etc type of joy. In this aim mainly sexual passion is noted. Nature, keeping in mind creatures’ procreation activity protection has kept the measure of this type of zest higher. Thus the word ‘Kama’ which really means desires is more used for sexual passion. The root meaning is actually wider. It can be said to be full of activity and progressiveness. If this were not the case then in life’s 4 meritorious goals called Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha the word Kama would not have been utilized. Say why would a Yogi, man of penance, realized saint, God realized master include sexual passion which dissipates life energy, in the fruits of life?

Kundalini energy is very widespread. Its electricity sometimes radiates in the sky which blinds our eye. Sexual passion makes man agitated and titillated. If the production of this super power is augmented and if it can be utilized in other important areas of life the result will be akin to setting up a small generator which in turn can circulate electricity in many areas. Life force’s one portion is used in procreation. A lot of energy still remains which can be used for more important and bliss bestowing tasks. Kundalini awakening helps generate more of such extra energy.

So far we spoke about the South Pole. The other pole of Kundalini lies in the brain region called Sahasrar. This is the North Pole. It is the center of living being consciousness and wisdom focusing. Ordinarily it is advanced via education and experience. The more it is advanced the more ones understanding augments. To that extent man attains more wealth and status in society. The mysterious layers of this center are radiated and made potent via the practice of Kundalini awakening. It is called divine wisdom or Divine Vision. Generally a discussion on the curiosity based miracles of ESP take place everywhere. We also hear about the mind boggling description of the intellectual skills of brainy people. This is not the result of school education or experiential practice. In fact behind it is at work some mysterious conscious layer. Via farsightedness and wisdom people make such programs which seldom fail else such well thought and defined tasks always get fulfilled. This too can be called a special psyche which the laymen do not possess. Even here are at work the manifestations of those deeper layers which do not appear with mere mundane efforts. It is only via spiritual efforts like Kundalini awakening that it is attained. If we see someone getting such mental capabilities suddenly, know for sure that this has been earned in previous borths.

The high stature success of consciousness based rising can be seen in 4 forms viz. soul wisdom, Brahman wisdom, spiritual philosophy wisdom and wholesome knowledge. If someone attains even a small portion of any of these, his/her wisdom talent rises extraordinarily. Spiritual seers, great thinkers, self realized masters know how to utilize their divine potentials for high stature endeavors. As a result despite taking an ordinary human garb they actually are saints, divine souls and self realized masters. They know about the inner state of this inert world. They are also capable of bringing about changes in it. Thus they are called Sidha Purushas.

The infinite storehouse of Kundalini Super Power has been handed over by God to the prince amongst creatures i.e. man. It is enclosed in the vault of the body. The root aim of Kundalini awakening is to open this vault and convert unconsciousness to awakening.

There are 2 paths of Primordial Energy Gayatri practice viz. Dakshin and Vam. In the Dakshin Path the 5 Sheaths or Koshas are unveiled and in Vam Path the 6 Chakras are awakened. The vital force activity present in the piercing of the 6 Chakras is called Kundalini awakening. Using this power can be easy or tedious too. It is easy for those who dare to walk on this path. It is difficult for those who are merely curious. Such people do not imbibe a definite plan or powerful resolve (Sankalpa) to execute this practice.

Both parts are important in their own right. None is big or small. In the visible life Kundalini and in the subtle world trance activities have to be made the basis. The combined result of both fulfills the requirement of all round progress. It is best that we make a combined use of the Tantrik aspect of Kundalini and the Vedic methodology of Trance Yoga. In the farsighted Rishi tradition it is advised that both be made use of together. The result of this is Brahmavarchas.

The person whose Kundalini awakens, remains as conscious in deep sleep as in the waking state. There is no difference in their dream and waking state. Just as in the waking state a realized saint talks to someone, hears things, thinks, inspires, helps and cooperates in the same way these activities go on in the dream state. In that state he/she can benefit others and for newer information can travel into other universes. By other universes we mean sun, moon, Jupiter, Venus etc. This appears amazing to us but for such people it is very ordinary. Many times spiritual seekers experience all this in their waking or sleep state. They also foresee future events or they unearth a secret or mystery. All this is the Power of Kundalini.

Two production centers of Kundalini exist. One exists in the solar center which is male and the other is female which is in the earth center. In the earth center Kundalini is said to be the center of life existence in living beings. This is actually the seed of solar Kundalini. It is said that whatever exists in the world can be found in seed form within the human body. The sun too in the form of Kundalini exists in the body. When in the bodily Mooladhar glands evolve the sun’s vital force gets embedded in it and its waking state is akin to the sun. It means that man’s potency becomes all pervasive and all powerful akin to sun’s power. At that time it is difficult to control it. Those with a weak mind and body cannot imbibe it.

Gayatri’s presiding deity is Savita and Kundalini’s representative force too is the sun. Hence the direct influence of Gayatri meditation is seen in the anus via the Merudand or subtle spine. The vital force flow that flows downwards reaches here first and then via subtle nerve networks gets circulated in the entire body. The more the means evolve the more the vital force augments and hence more intense is Kundalini awakening. This light starts slowly radiating in the eyes, speech, face and forehead. In the skin it augments softness, in the brain sacredness and purity. This activity takes place slowly but surely. Thus there is no possibility of danger. The devotee while getting directions for soul welfare attains the true goal of all lives viz. liberation while alive and is also called Jivan Mukti.

On being awakened Kundalini totally transforms man’s inner personality and external form. Thus a revolution takes place both within and without. But this revolution is possible only when the bodily Kundalini conjoins with Solar Kundalini. This act is akin to transporting water to a field via a pipe connected to a lake. Gayatri practice is of immense help in conjoining bodily Kundalini with Solar Kundalini. This practice of Kundalini practice is no doubt time consuming but unlike other practices is not dangerous at all. Other practices appear as though they will help awaken Kundalini but the hardships faced in such practices, the dangers that are related to them are such that a lot of time and hard work is taken up in overcoming them. Thus what appears to be a practice that quickly helps attain the goal is in reality very time consuming. Hence deep thinkers opine that Gayatri practice easily helps us attain the goal of Kundalini awakening.

Teaching Hatha Yoga – Balance Ajna Chakra and Intuition

If one is able to balance the Ajna chakra, this will promote intuition, awareness, and self-mastery. The Ajna chakra (third eye) is the sixth main chakra within the seven chakra system. One way to activate this chakra is to practice Udgeeth pranayama.

The seed sound, which we know as “OM,” is said to awaken and balance the divine eye. This chakra balancing technique can be approached in a similar way, through mantra meditation or through practicing a form of Ajna chakra meditation. In fact, there are many ways to balance and awaken chakras. If one is new to Yoga practice, it would be wise to practice under the supervision of a competent Yoga teacher or Guru.

Let’s be honest – if you survey students in your classes about their home Yoga practice, very few will say they meditate at home. Many students practice asana independently, but they usually do not think beyond their bodies, unless they have been practicing Hatha Yoga for years.

Below are two techniques for students, who wish to enhance their powers of intuition. These intuitive enhancing techniques can be practiced any time of the day; and a student does not have to be concerned with meditation, mudras, pranayama, posture, or seed sounds.

Associate with people who see the good in everything. There are many people, who default to negative thinking. One of the reasons why people feel so pessimistic is that bad news travels quicker than ever before. Now you can read, hear, or view a video about a traffic fatality, on the other side of the earth, at any time of day or night.

If you are feeling too optimistic, a sure remedy is to watch the news. Your mood could easily change to remorse, sorrow, anger, or depression in an instant. Negative thoughts and positive thoughts balance each other throughout the day. The object is to be aware of your mind’s energy balance and train your mind to avoid judging. This clears the mind to see life as it is, and enhances one’s powers of intuition.

Speak positively or do not speak at all. I am not sure who first said, “If you have nothing good to say, don’t say anything at all.” This is the hardest task for most of us to endure. Jumping in on negative chatter is so easy to do. To take the high road, in conversation, is a daily struggle; and many of us may find it an hourly struggle.

The reason why the above two tips will enhance intuition is due to the clarity of thought, which will result from practicing them. After trying above-mentioned techniques, students will often admit that Ajna chakra meditation is much easier, but the value of clear thought cannot be over stated.

Companies, investors, and governments employ people who have good intuitive skills. In this day of technology, computers, data, and complex reports, world powers still value intuition. For the average person, intuition may determine one specific path among many.

The Seven Chakra System of Hatha Yoga

There is much more to Hatha Yoga than asana practice.  Every competent Yoga teacher training graduate knows about the major, minor, and lesser chakras.  Every Yoga certification course worth its weight teaches graduates about the subtle body of Yoga, Ayurveda, and Chinese medicine.

There are many different beliefs regarding the number of major chakras in the Yogic subtle body. It seems the most common theory is seven or eight major chakras or nerve centers in the subtle body. Each chakra is described with a color, flower with a specific number of petals, personality characteristics, a corresponding part of the body and an element.

Not all Yoga systems or Gurus completely agree on the exact characteristics of the seven major chakras.  Each chakra also has a corresponding mantra sound to awaken it. In Kundalini yoga there is a serpent (the Kundalini) at the first chakra and the serpent can be awakened as it moves through the seven main chakras. As the chakras are balanced, under the guidance of a competent Guru, a Yoga practitioner can reach deeper levels of consciousness.

1. First Chakra, Muladhara - this is a yellow chakra with four petals. Its element is earth and its mantra sound is LAM. The body part associated with this charka is the base or root. Its is associated with being grounded and balanced characteristics are roundedness, physical health, being comfortable with your body, stability, safety, prosperity and being present in the here and now.

2. Second chakra, Swahisthana – this is a white chakra with 6 petals. Its element is water and its mantra is VAM. The body part associated with this chakra is the abdomen and reproduction. It is associated with moving and its balancing characteristics are gracefulness, ability to embrace change , emotional intelligence, being nurturing, ability to set boundaries and enjoy pleasure, passion and sexual satisfaction

3. Third chakra, Manipura – This is the red chakra with 10 petals. Its element is fire and its mantra is RAM. It is associated with Directing. The part of the body associated with this chakra is the solar plexus. Balancing characteristics are Full voice, good communication and listening skills, good sense of timing and rhythm.

4. Fourth chakra, Anahata – This is a green chakra and has 12 petals, its element is air and its mantra is Yam. It is associated with loving and is associated with the lungs, heart, pericardium upper ribs, inner arms and hands, Balancing characteristics are caring, compassion, empathy, acceptance, self loving peaceful centered and contentment.

5. Fifth Chakra, Vishuddha – This is the sea-blue chakra that has 16 petals. Its element is ether and it mantra is Ham. It is associated with expression and is referred to as the throat chakra connecting the neck, shoulders, mouth and jaw and related to the thyroid gland. Balancing characteristics are full voice, communicates and listens well, good sense of timing and rhythm and creativity.

6. Sixth chakra – Ajna – This snow white chakra has two petals. OM mantra is OM. This chakra is about seeing both internally and externally, It is associated with the eyes The balancing characteristics are strong intuition, insight, imagination, memory, dream recall, visualization and has a guiding vision for life.

7. Seventh chakra – Sahasrara – The thousand petal chakra corresponds to the Absolute. When the serpent, kundalini reaches the seventh chakra the yogi attains Samadhi or super consciousness. The crown charka is the most important it is the consciousness of all other chakra. It is associated spiritual connection, wisdom and mastery, intelligence, being open minded, ability to question, assimilate and analyze information.

THE BANDHAS AND THEIR APPLICATION

The word, “Bandha” means to lock, to bind, to tie together. Bandhas involve the contraction, or squeezing, of muscles. There are three muscular locks called, Jalandhara Bandha, Uddiyana Bandha, and Mula Bandha. They are situated in the throat, abdomen, and perineum, respectively. When we apply these three Bandhas together, it becomes Maha Bandha, the great lock. As there are three bandhas, there are three muscles group involved: cervical (neck) muscles, abdominal muscles, and perineal muscles.

These internal energy locks direct the Prana, or life force, up the spine – rather than allow it to escape downwards, as it normally would, and convert it into spiritual energy. Jalandhara Bandha prevents Prana from escaping the upper body; Uddiyana Bandha forces Prana up the Shushumna Nadi; and Mula Bandha, when engaged, prevents Apana escaping from the lower body and draws it up to unite with Prana.

Contraction of these muscles affects the nervous, circulatory, respiratory, endocrine, and energy systems. As endocrine glands are intimately related to the Chakras, it means Bandhas also affect the Chakras. On all the Chakras, the Bandhas are directly associated with the active stimulation of three Chakras – Mulabandha (Muladhara Chakra), Uddiyana Bandha (Manipura Chakra), and Jalandhara Bandha (Vishuddhi Chakra). Each of these physical, and practice locations, is related neurologically to a specific counterpart in the spinal cord, brain; and therefore, the psyche.

BANDHA TECHNIQUES

• Bandhas are advanced practice and should be attempted only under guidance.

• In learning Bandha techniques, you always begin with Jalandhar Bandha, before attempting to learn the other two.

JALANDHAR BANDHA

The Sanskrit word, “Jalan” means net and “Dhara” means stream or flow. This lock controls the network of Nadis in the neck. The physical manifestation of these Nadis is the blood vessels and the nerves of the neck. It is also called the throat lock. In Pranayama, there is a possibility of increasing the blood pressure, and accordingly, achieving Jalandhar Bandha. At the same time, Pranayama can help control blood pressure, protect the brain, and give energy to the brain instantly.

TECHNIQUE

• Sit on a folded blanket in Siddhasana (Press the perineum with the left heel and place the right heel on the left thigh) or any other comfortable posture. Place the palms on the knee; keep the neck and the spine straight. Close the eyes, and relax the whole body.

• Now inhale slowly, and deeply, and at the end of inhalation and the beginning of retention of breath, stretch the neck forward and press the chin firmly against the chest, into the jugular notch (the hollow formed in the neck), as far as possible.

• Straighten the arms by pressing the knee down with the palms.

• Stay in this final position for as long as the breath can be held comfortably. Do not strain.

• Then bring the chin up and exhale. This is one round.

• Repeat when the respiration has returned to normal. This practice may be repeated up to 5 times.

• This Bandha is ideally performed in conjuction with Pranayamas and Mudras. It can be practiced on its own or before meditation.

BENEFITS

Stretches the neck – pulling the spinal cord and the brain has subtle effects on the pituitary and pineal glands, while the forward flexion affects the thyroid, parathyroid, and thymus glands. At the same time, it stimulates the parasympathetic spinal area, in the medulla oblongata (situated at the bottom of the brain and the top of the spinal cord), regulating heart rate, respiration, blood pressure, etc.

Jalandhar Bandha also compresses the carotid sinuses, which are located on the carotid arteries – the main arteries in the neck. These sinuses help to regulate the circulatory and respiratory systems. By reducing sympathetic tone, depression, stress, anxiety, and anger, one achieves a sense of rest, relaxation, and general well-being.

PRECAUTION

People suffering from cervical spondylosis, high intracranial pressure, respiratory problems, vertigo, high and low blood pressure, and heart disease, should not practice Jalandhar Bandha on their own – unless advised by the Yoga experts – since long retention of the breath may bring about some strain on the heart.

UDDIYAN BANDHA

The Sanskrit word, “Uddiyana” means to rise up or to fly upward. This practice is so called because the physical lock applied to the body causes the diaphragm to rise towards the chest. Another meaning is that the physical lock helps Prana into Sushumna Nadi and that it flows upward to Sahasrara Chakra. Uddiyana Bandha can be combined with Nauli Shatkarma.

TECHNIQUE

Uddiyana Bandha can be practiced either standing or in sitting posture.

• In the standing posture, place the feet approximately two feet apart. Keep the spine straight, bend the knees slightly, and lean forward from the waist – far enough to place the palms just above the knees. Make sure the arms are straight.

• As you begin to exhale, you contract the abdomen and place the chin on the hollow of the throat. By the end of the exhalation, the abdomen should be fully contracted, drawn up and back toward the spine – by pressing the knees with the palms.

• With this contraction, the diaphragm rises and creates a cavity on the front side of the abdomen, under the rib cage. The back will curve slightly.

• The position is held as long as possible; do not strain and then release.

• This is one round. Repeat when the respiration has returned to normal. This practice may be repeated up to 5 times.

• When this Bandha is mastered, the navel moves toward the spine and the rectal and back muscles contract.

BENEFITS

Abdominal contraction compresses the digestive organs, adrenal glands, kidneys, and the most important – the solar plexus. Solar plexus has many subtle influences on the distribution of energy throughout the body. The energy has healing qualities and is experienced consciously as beneficial and enhancing our sense of well-being. Uddiyana Bandha tones the sympathetic nervous system, thus avoiding the effects of stress and anxiety in psychosomatic disease. This Bandha is the panacea for many abdominal and stomach ailments – including constipation, indigestion, worms, and diabetes – provided they are not chronic. The adrenal glands are balanced – removing lethargy, anxiety, and tension. It improves blood circulation to the whole trunk area and strengthens all the internal organs. The extra fat of the stomach is also melted off. The body becomes active and alert. Uddiyana Bandha is one of the finest exercises for the abdominal muscles.

PRECAUTION

• During Pranayama, this Bandha is to be practiced only in the sitting position. It must always be practiced on an empty stomach. Agnisar Kriya is an excellent preparatory practice.

• Never force the abdominal muscles outward; use force only in pulling the muscles in and upward.

• Do not practice this exercise if there is any problem of high blood pressure, hiatal hernia, ulcers, or heart disorders. Women should not practice it during menstruation or pregnancy.

MULA BANDHA

The Sanskrit word, “Mula” means root, firmly fixed, source, or cause. Together, the words Mula and Bandha refer to the contraction of Muladhara Chakra – the seat of Kundalini. This contraction is triggered at the root of the spine, the perineum. Mula Bandha is also known as the perineal lock. It occurs simultaneously at many levels. On the physical level, it is the physical contraction of muscles. However, when refined, Mula Bandha is the contraction of Muladhara Chakra. Thus, Mula Bandha is not just the contraction of the perineal body/cervix, but also the locking of Muladhara Chakra. The perineal body and cervix act as trigger points to enable us to locate the psychic centre of Muladhara Chakra.

TECHNIQUE

Sit on a folded blanket in Siddhasana posture. Keep the palms on the knees and slightly press them. Gently close the eyes and relax the whole body, by watching the natural breath for a while. Focus your awareness on the anus region. While exhaling, contract this region by squeezing the muscles in and up. Hold the contraction for some time, with normal breathing. Do not hold the breath. Repeat 10 times, with maximum contraction and total relaxation. With further practice, the duration can be increased 3 to 5 minutes.

BENEFITS

• This Bandha stimulates both the sensory-motor and the autonomic nervous systems in the pelvic region. When Mula Bandha is performed, pelvic stimulation activates parasympathetic fibres emerging from the pelvic spinal cord. Parasympathetic fibres emerge from the cervical (neck) and sacral (pelvic) areas only, while sympathetic fibres emerge from the thoracic (upper back) and lumbar (lower back) areas. Sympathetic nervous stimulation also occurs in Mula Bandha, but at a subdued level. The overall effect of stimulating both parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems is to re-balance these two major components of nervous activity in the body.

• This has very definite effects on the hypothalamus (responsible for the complete endocrine system), which relays its information to the whole limbic (emotional) system and the cerebral cortex (outer layer of the brain).

• It stimulates the uro-genital and excretory systems. Intestinal peristalsis is also stimulated, relieving constipation and piles. It is beneficial for anal fissures, ulcers, prostatitis, some cases of prostatic hypertrophy, and chronic pelvic infections.

• Because of the pressure on the anal sphincter, during Mula Bandha, heat is generated which causes Apana Vayu to move upward. The usual tendency of this Vayu is to move downward. However, this practice forces Apana to move upward and unite with Prana Vayu at the navel center. Ultimately, in the course of its upward journey, the energy aroused at the base of the spine assimilates Apana (at the Muladhara Chakra) and Prana (in the region of the navel and chest) and then reaches the forehead. Therefore, with the help of other Mudras and Maha-vedha Kriya, it is forced to enter into the central channel, Sushumna – leaving its normal course through Ida and Pingala. Eventually, Mula Bandha becomes spontaneous and effortless.

The perfection of this practice leads to a spontaneous re-alignment of the physical, mental, and psychic bodies – in preparation for spiritual awakening.

PRECAUTION

Mula Bandha raises the energies very fast and can precipitate symptoms of hyperactivity, if performed wrongly.

MAHA BANDHA

The Sanskrit word, “Maha” means great. Maha Bandha is called the great lock, as it combines all the three Bandhas in one practice.

TECHNIQUE

Sit on a folded blanket, in Siddhasana posture. Keep the palms on the knees and slightly press them. Gently close the eyes and relax the whole body, by watching the natural breath for a while. Exhale forcefully, and completely, through the mouth. Retain the breath outside. Perform Jalandhara, Uddiyana, and Mula Bandha – in this order. Hold the Bandhas and the breath as long as is comfortable, without straining. Then release Mula, Uddiyana, and Jalandhara Bandha – in this order. After coming back, inhale slowly. This is one round. Relax and let the breath return to normal before commencing the next round. Make 3-5 rounds.

BENEFITS

Maha Bandha gives the benefits of all three Bandhas. It affects the hormonal secretions of the pineal gland and regulates the entire endocrine system. The decaying, degenerative, and aging processes are checked, and every cell of the body is rejuvenated. It soothes anger and introverts the mind prior to meditation. When perfected, it can fully awaken Prana in the main Chakras. It leads to the merger of Prana, Apana, and Samana, in Agni Mandala, which is the culmination of all Pranayamas.

PRECAUTION

Do not attempt Maha Bandha until other three Bandhas have been mastered. People suffering from high or low blood pressure, heart conditions, hernia, stomach or intestinal ulcer, persons with physical weakness and those recovering from visceral ailments, should avoid this practice. Women should not practice it during menstruation or pregnancy.

IMPORTANCE OF BANDHAS

• The Bandhas play an important role in the cleansing processes of Yoga. Pranayama helps to reduce waste matter in the body, by directing the Agni, the fire of life. In the same way, by using the Bandhas, the Agni can be directed to the exact place where the rubbish has settled, blocking the flow of energy in the body. The Bandhas intensify the effect of the fire.

• The muscles, which are not generally used, are contracted in these Bandhas. This results in more of a blood supply to these muscles – thereby improving their efficiency.

BANDHAS AND ASANAS

These three Bandhas can be used during asana practice. The best asanas, for practicing Bandhas, are a few of the inverted postures – such as headstand, shoulder stand, and all postures in which we are lying flat on the back, such as Tadasana and sitting postures, with a straight spine – such as Mahamudra. Another simple position for practicing the Bandhas is Adhomukha Shavasna (the downward facing dog). The Bandhas are easy in these asanas because raising the rubbish into the flame with Uddiyana Bandha, and holding it there with Mula Bandha, is greatly assisted by the body mechanics of the posture. In all inverted postures, the rubbish is raised to sit above the flame. The flame burns up toward the rubbish and the rubbish moves down toward the flame. The practice of Bandhas is very difficult in asanas, such as backbend and twists, and is, therefore, best avoided.

NOTE

Do not use Bandhas throughout the entire asana practice. These should be practiced artfully and not obsessively.

BANDHAS AND PRANAYAMA

These three Bandhas can be used during Pranayama practice. When we use these Bandhas with Pranayama, they intensify the cleansing effect of Pranayama. Jalandhara Bandha positions the torso in such a way that the spine is held erect. This makes it easier for the prana to move the flame toward the rubbish that needs burning. Uddiyana Bandha then raises the rubbish up toward the flame, and Mula Bandha helps us leave it there long enough for the rubbish to be burned.

PRANAYAMA AND BANDHAS

• Omkar and Bhramari Pranayama can be done by applying Uddiyana and Mula Bandha.

• Shitali and Sitkari Pranayama can be practiced by applying three Bandhas together. For that – we should do the Pranayama with time ratio, that is 1:4:2:4—one is for inhalation, four times is for holding of the breath, two is for exhalation; again four times is for holding of the breath. We should apply the Bandhas while holding the breath.

• Anulome-vilome, Ujjayi, Kapalbhati, and Bhastrika can be done by applying Jalandhar Bandha. When we practice vigorous Pranayama, such as Kapalbhati and Bhastrika, we spend lots of energy by doing rapid breathing, Jalandhar Bandha helps us to get the energy back instantly.

In short, Jalandhar Bandha and Mula Bandha can be maintained during the whole process of inhalation, exhalation, and holding the breath. Uddiyana Bandha can only be done during breath retention, following exhalation. To intensify the practice, we must practice patiently without forcing the body or the breath.

Yoga and Its Relation to Health

Yoga is a way of developing the whole human being simultaneously. It is a matter of becoming free, integrated and centred. The person who is centred knows who they are and their inner confidence is unmistakable. They have a zest for living and are truly grateful for the blessings in their life. They radiate an aura of peace and contentment living each moment with mindfulness and positivity.

Health would be described as how the physical body is operating. Living and participating in life; not just existing. How we walk, talk, think, breathe, eat, our stamina, and how the body reacts to all that we put it through. When we say we are in a state of “health” we are referring to a state of wellbeing and balance. Physical health is meaningless, if not impossible, without a related mental, emotional and spiritual health.

When a person decides to takes control of their life-style of health and says “I am turning over a new leaf, I am changing my daily regime, my goal is now to become fit and healthy.” We would look at the many changes that they would have to make in their day to day existence. The first step on their new path would be that they would liberate themselves of “the chains that bound them” by a new way of thinking, recognizing that their body is a temple or if they prefer to see it as a Mercedes Benz they would realize that what enters the body or what petrol and maintenance that you give the car, is what performance and life that it will return to you, and with regular upkeep it will not break down and leave you stranded on life’s highways. It will be reliable and working in top functioning order, remembering how important the air in the tyres is, like the prana in your life. You can always give the car a wash and polish on the outside to look good, but it is the continual maintenance of the mechanical side as well, and dedication of realising what you put into anything is what you get back.

Having changed their lifestyle they would have become centred and calm and have a heightened awareness of all creation around them.

Yoga and health are like a marriage, both complimenting each other, working hand in hand, a team effort which becomes stronger with each encounter supporting one another, in facing life’s adversities as well as good times. Growing older together with grace, acceptance, tolerance, and knowledge.

Let’s start from the beginning of life. A baby’s arrival to this earth plane.

When a woman announces that she is expecting a baby, often the question is posed “do you prefer a boy or a girl?” her reply is frequently “I don’t care so long as my baby is healthy.”

The woman during pregnancy maintains a healthy lifestyle which includes diet, exercise, rest, plenty of fresh air, and breathing techniques which will especially be put to use for the birth, as will also the pre natal asanas.

During the incubation process the use of Bio-feedback technology like ultra sounds to see the baby and determine its sex , if required, or the position that it is in, and monitors for heartbeats are a vital technique that living in the 21st century has produced.

When the birth-day arrives, the baby is delivered and the first thing that is essential to life is the breath, the life force energy, the prana. With the wondrous event of life, the breathing is checked and established, all is well.

Breathing is a natural function of the body which happens without conscious effort. It is the body’s most vital process, and is the only autonomic function which we are also able to control. We know that we can stay alive without eating for a few weeks, without drinking for a few days, but irreversible brain damage occurs if we are deprived of air for more than a few minutes.

Efficient breathing is essential for good health as it supplies us with oxygen which is absorbed into the bloodstream within the lungs and then carried to all tissues and cells of the body. Oxygen is exchanged for carbon dioxide and other waste products, which are removed from the system through the breathing process . Poor breathing habits bring about low levels of oxygen, which impedes the removal of waste matter, and results in the retention of toxins.

As the prana passes through the nose it stimulates the sense of smell, nadis and the chakras. We have the sense of smell, sight, sound, touch, and taste. We also have a 6th sense which is our intuition – our inner sight.- Our connection to higher learning which we are all born with.

Energy flows through the spine, sending impulses to the brain by means of the nervous system, transmitting commands from the brain to the muscles and internal organs, controlling circulation, digestion, respiration, elimination and even the beating of the heart.

The baby’s breathing has been checked and in order. The mother enquires “has the baby got all fingers, toes, and limbs?”  ”Yes, all digits and limbs are in order”, the nurse replies.

Yoga also has limbs. There are eight limbs.

These limbs are a good instruction manual for rearing a child.

1. Yama Restraints – ethical disciplines – moral commandments – universal.

Non violence, truthfulness, non-stealing. Without disciplines and moral codes there is no respect or boundaries and that is when children have to be gently guided and shown the correct way and respect of all living things.

2. Niyama Observances – rules of conducting applying to individual discipline. Contentment, self control. Cultivation of a strong character through the Yogic disciplines, lack of complaint. Being shown the difference between “yes” the child may do something, and “no” the child may not do something, is an individual guiding pendulum for right and wrong.

3. Asanas – Bodily postures which promote health and wellbeing and can be done together sharing a common interest. The family that plays together, stays together.

4. Pranayama – Vital energy or breath control. How to compose yourself in difficult situations, using the breath as a vital tool. Learning to take control.

5. Pratyahara – Sense withdrawal, learning how to relax and release tension.

6. Dharna – Concentration useful with school work.

7. Dhyana - Meditation, an inner experience of stillness and peace.

8. Samadhi – A person in the state of samadhi; is in direct contact with pure truth, gaining knowledge directly. Showing the child how to meditate is the first step on this wonderful path that is in front of them, the gift from God is their life. Having taught the child about Karma he will practise understanding and do unto others as he would have them do unto him.

After the birth of the baby, the mother may wish to return to the weight and size she was prior to pregnancy. Asanas contract, relax or stretch the back muscles, keeping them in good condition. The spinal column is kept elastic as each vertebra, disc, ligament and tendon is made to work. The weight of the full term baby has put pressure on the sacral spine and a return to the asanas will help particularly with the pelvic exercises to regain her previous body type in healthy working order.

The way we move, walk, and talk is an expression of our life like an open window to our physical and emotional state. Good alignment and posture is imperative for the working of the respiratory system.

When rearing a baby it is important to find the correct balance in food, water, discipline, sleep, and know that some things in life just aren’t black or white we have to look to the middle grey area. This is also found in Yoga we need to find the Gunas the understanding between different natures and temperaments. Knowing that no two babies are the same. Everyone is a unique being. The qualities of the Gunas are

Sattva – Expressing itself in goodness, purity, lightness, spirituality.

Rajas – Seen as activeness, mobility, speed, restlessness, passion.

Tamas – Typified as passivity, inertia, immobility, sluggishness, earthbound, ignorance.

We need to be conscious of the Rajas (speed) and the Tamas (inertia) so we can find the balance the Sattva. Of the physical, mental and spiritual being.

All children have their own special talents latent or disclosed, we as parents need to foster these and allow the child to work and develop at their own pace. Some children work more on the left hand side of the brain and are mathematically inclined. Others work more with the right hand side of the brain and are creative and arty, each one contributing to mankind. Never compare one sibling to another for each one plays their role in life, bringing their special qualities to humankind.

The Aura is affected by words and cruel words can put holes in the aura. Health plays a large part of the Aura and each day the colours of the aura change as it reflects the state of our health and wellbeing.

Maya is a way of seeing things (Cosmic Illusion) for example if we look at one person, we could be looking at a mother, or a sister, or a daughter or a wife it depends on the “viewer.” So we deal with another aspect, the emotional aspect, which can affect our health and how we see and handle situations. We need to encourage “that with every negative situation there is always a positive outcome or reason”. Understanding and accepting, becomes part of our healthier lifestyle, and knowing everything happens for a reason on this earth plane, which is the school of life. We hopefully learn by our mistakes, and grow.

Relaxation teaches the art of relaxing each component of the physical body and begins a chain reaction of peace. ” I allow myself to relax, I am relaxing, I am at peace. Peace in, peace out,” and then this becomes reality. We are what we think. “With our minds, we can create a heaven, or a hell, the choice is ours.”

Working on the Mind we can find the benefits of colour therapy and music. Visualisation is enhanced by using colour as some people find it hard to visualise . When deciding on what colour to paint a nursery it is important to remember how colour affects us. If you painted the nursery red it would be too energetic and the child would have trouble sleeping. The pale colours of blue and green have a healing effect as does pink, which means “rose” and is said to be the language of angels. Even lemon has a softness like a little chicken’s feathers.

The lighting has an effect on humans as some people perform better on sunny days as when it is cold and bleak they just wish to hibernate like a bear. The Sun is the masculine energy, Ha, and is warm and golden yellow, whereas the moon is affected by tides, it is the female energy Tha, and is silvery blue. Even observing what colour each person is wearing is an incite into how they are feeling on that particular day.

Colour can be used in projection healing also. Visualising the part of the body that needs to be healed of an ache or pain and focusing the input of the colour to assist in this process. Inhaling bringing the colour into the particular area that is affected, and as you exhale, visualising taking the ache, pain, or toxins away and see it dissipating out into the universe, or going back into the ground. We start to expand our way of thinking knowing that there may be alternate ways of handling an ache or pain. Using the energy of the hands; the prana, and placing them on an area of the body that also may not be in optimum operation is just another technique. The hands may also be used above the area working with the prana, coming to the healer, working through the person being healed, connecting to the higher source for the healing of mankind. (to you, and through you). Chakra balancing is another form of healing, with the astral and physical body. Massaging the baby is a healing process.

Even our appetite for food may be determined by its attractive coloured presentation.

Also remembering sattva food and everything in moderation.

Music is uplifting to the soul . Lullabies are sung to the baby and also a gentle rocking motion helps to encourage sleep to the tired child. Mantras may also be used to bring peace to the infant.

The baby takes “baby steps” and as it grows it starts to walk, which is likened to the introduction to Yoga and the learning of the different asanas . Working gradually, and learning the benefits that they have on the different parts of the body . The child’s absorption of knowledge is expanded as each year unfolds and different experiences occurs, and hopefully, the child learns by trial and error.

These experiences have a great impact on the child’s health both physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally, some people become emotional eaters, overeating for comfort from the food instead of looking into the real problem.

The teenage years are filled with many hormonal changes, we need to have balanced activity in the secretion glands. As the child’s body changes so too does the voice, their own ideas and independence comes to the fore. It has been said that a child is like the arrow in an Archer’s bow. We the parents are the bow, we can place the arrow and aim for the right direction but many factors come into play, wind velocity and turbulence but the greatest factor is Personal Responsibility for everyone shapes their own destiny. We are the soft cushion for the fall if needed.

Sometimes the adolescent’s world seems to be upside down, this too is reflective of inverted postures which help rejuvenate the body and mind. The effect of gravity has on our bodies is reversed which aids venous blood from the legs and abdomen to return to the heart and lungs. Fresh oxygenated blood is brought to the head. The brain is energised and stimulated which enhances the function of the intellect. The increased blood flow brings a flush of nutrients and clears away toxins, rejuvenating facial tissue and reducing the signs of ageing. Throat, ears, eyes and nose, in fact the whole head and neck, all receive an increased blood flow which helps them function more effectively.

All inverted poses have an effect on the pituitary gland which orchestrates all other endocrine glands. The chin is pressed to the chest which stimulates the thyroid and parathyroid glands which will affect and regulate metabolism. The heart, lungs, thymus and immune system are stimulated.

Meditation is the answer to grounding ourselves once again and seeing just what is important in our lives and what is irrelevant. Teaching others the connection to spirit and helping them to find the peace and perhaps the guidance of their guides. Having the knowledge and understanding that we are never alone, is a comforting blessing to all..

Emotions play a large part with our health. Perhaps with a warmth of a smile to one who has lost theirs, an outstretched hand to someone in need, a joyful gift or flower to another, or to yourself, just to celebrate the beauty of being. The last thing we think of at such times is the consequences to our health. Scientists have found that small pleasures may keep immune systems strong, and that pleasant events boost the immune system for as long as two days.

What do we do in yoga? We adopt body positions which make our bodies feel good, we foster attitudes which are totally positive, we expand our senses so that we feel and see the beauty in life, in ourselves and we practise meditation which creates the stillness barrier across which unhelpful thoughts and attitudes cannot pass. All these are immune-system strengthening, giving us good health and happiness.

We live our life to the blueprint and when it is time to depart this world we hopefully have realised just what life was all about. The infant, the youth, the teenager, the stages of career and marriage, becoming parents aging, not worrying about material possessions that you had earnestly collected in your younger life. The death of loved ones, the fostering of friends, the happy celebrations, laughter and tears. Like a computer print out of life we recall the different events and reactions to those events, and we can see how Karma is just a book-keeping of life, where the assets should out-way the liabilities.

We are just a soul that has taken a body to return to the school of life. This is now over and it is time to cut the cord and for the Astral body to depart and return “home”,

The child had the key which was Yoga and was shown how to use it. The child, and in turn, the adult; unlocked the doors of knowledge of the many different paths of yoga. Each one, in their own time, at the many different intervals of their life. Now they realize that treading the path of yoga, they saw their pattern of life unfold, and learnt that their reactions to events affected their outcomes and now know” that we don’t always get what we want we sometimes get what we really need.”

Yoga taught them the understanding of events, and helped realise that they were not treading a lonely path they actually had plenty of company from likeminded people. One day the key did fit perfectly into the lock and they found the gift of Yoga which is unity and bliss. Unity with all the universe, understanding, compassion, tolerance, respect, health, peace, love and harmony. Happiness was always within and all they needed to do was to turn within. “The inner self is filled with bliss, it is to experience the bliss, to come close to the self, that we practise Yoga.”

Gradually, the way of living was changed, and the partnership of Yoga and Health became the secret formula to a long and healthy happy life.

Yoga provided us with the tool of self-acceptance which is probably the most powerful tool of the human condition, and with the knowledge of the intrinsic Godliness of life itself. This, in turn, carried us into respect for all life, including our own, for all patterns of the human condition and gave us the awareness of the universal support and love which surrounded and sustained us. When those components formed the basis of our life, our state of “health” was reached.

Dr. Rita Khanna(THREE BODIES & FIVE SHEATHS)

THE THREE BODIES

According to Yoga Shastras, we have three bodies. These three bodies consist of the physical body, astral or subtle body, and the casual or super-subtle body. Throughout the subtle body are energy channels, through which our life energy flows. Through regular practice of Yoga and pranayama, you can keep your physical body under control; it would be easier for you to reach your higher self. The astral, or the subtle body, is related to the mind and chakra energy system. Breathing exercises, the practice of prathyhara, and concentration, can help control the astral or subtle body. The casual or the super-subtle body is the finest body. It contains the soul itself and your connection to the God. You can communicate with this body through meditation and the attainment of samadhi or enlightenment.

THE FIVE SHEATHS OF EXISTENCE

Within these three bodies are five sheaths of existence, which are like layers of energy – each containing and governing different aspects of your body. They are the physical sheath (annamaya-kosha, the vital sheath (pranamaya-kosha), the mind sheath (manomaya-kosha), the intellect sheath (vijnanamaya-kosha), and the bliss sheath (anandamaya-kosha). These five sheaths are the covering of the self or the soul. Taittiriya Upanishad gives us the Pancha Kosha Viveka to help discriminate between the self and the non-self. They help us understand what is self and how these sheets move from the gross physical body to the subtle spiritual body. Once we develop an understanding of the five koshas, it helps us to slowly peel off these layers and bring us closer to our true identity.

PHYSICAL SHEATH (ANNAMAYA KOSHA) (Physical Body)

The word anna means food and maya means composed of. Physical sheath is composed of food, blood, flesh, bones, skin, hair, organs, and systems. This is the body, which is most familiar to us. It is also made of five elements namely earth, water, fire, air, and space. Each body system is related to a particular element; i.e. the skeletal system is related to earth, the circulatory and immune systems to water, the respiratory system to air, the digestive system to fire, and the central nervous system to space. This remains in a state of balance – only when all the elements are in synchronization. The gross, or physical body, obtained knowledge of the external world through ear, skin, eyes, tongue, and nose and does actions through the mouth, arms, legs, anus, and penis – which helps her for functioning of speech, holding, walking, excretion, and procreation. Due to the presence of the ego, this body undergoes six transformations: birth, growth, disease, old age, decay, and death and has qualities like I am fat or thin, I am white or black, I am young or old, I am man or a women, I am healthy or sick, attractive or unattractive, big or small. They feel separate from the self, and it is very difficult for them to leave these. It is our responsibility to take good care of this sheath and to re-define our relationship with our body through regular yogic asanas, cleansing kriyas, proper diet, and relaxation. As the body purifies, you begin to experience the inner bodies; energy and consciousness manifest in a subtler form. Then, you realize that the body is not the self. Hence, the self is different from the body, unchanging, ever pure, and free from modifications.

VITAL SHEATH (PRANAYMAYA KOSHA) (Astral Body)

The next layer of experience is pranamaya kosha – movement of the pranic force directing our physical and mental activities. This movement happens through nadis or channels, conductors of energy, which are controlled by the six chakras. Vital sheath is a subtler sheath when compared to annamaya kosha. This is composed of vital energy. As long as this vital energy exists in the organisms, life continues. This sheath is responsible for our physiological functions; namely breathing, digesting, metabolizing, circulation, endocrinal, neural, skeletal, muscular, etc. This body has qualities like hunger, thirst, sleep, fatigue, evacuation, and regeneration. These states come in cycles and depend upon external conditions, such as food, air, water, and other factors. Due to the presence of the ego, our body functions become imbalanced. To balance these systems, one of the methods of purification of the nadis, or channels, is through Nadi-sodhana pranayama. As you begin to experience this aspect of existence, you discover that this sheath is merely an illusion covering over the eternal self. Hence, the self is different from the body, unchanging, ever pure, and free from modifications.

THE MIND SHEATH (MANOMAYA KOSHA) (Astral Body –Lower Mind)

This sheath is the energy of action. This mental sheath is composed of two qualities, mana (mind) and buddhi (intellect). Mana is the rational, linear, sequential, thoughtful mind. Buddhi is the quality of discrimination, which comes after knowledge, after the removal, or the absence of ignorance. The former constitutes the manomaya kosha, while the latter is called the Vigyanmaya Kosha. Mind gives power to the senses – in sense perceptions and action. It collects the sensory information from the senses and sends them to the intellect for ascertaining their nature. This portion of the mind lacks the cognitive abilities of reasoning; void of any discrimination. People, residing in this layer, experience pain, pleasure, longing, doubt, fear, and the many tides of emotion. When the mind is cheerful, we are happy. When the mind is gloomy, we are depressed. We are at the mercy of the mind that waxes and wanes. We suffer from these because we gave all the powers to the mind and made it our master. These vrittis, of this mind, lead to habitual imbalances at manomaya kosha. You can learn to control the mind and intellect sheaths through breath control, the practice of sense withdrawal (pratyahara), and concentration techniques. When these techniques are done with a sense of total devotion, the body purifies and it loses its solidity. Then anger and serenity, sadness and happiness, sorrow and joy are each welcomed happily. As you begin to experience this aspect of existence, you discover that this sheath is merely an illusion, covering over the eternal self. Hence, the self is different from the body, unchanging, ever pure, and free from modifications. Therefore, the self is a witness of the Manomaya Kosha.

THE INTELLECT SHEATH (VIJNANAMAYA-KOSHA) (Astral Body-Higher Mind)

The Vijnanamaya kosha is the sheath of the intellect(buddhi) and intuitive knowledge/wisdom, which gives us the discriminative capability that helps to differentiate between virtues and vice, good and bad, right and wrong, truth and untruth. It controls the mind, the senses, the fructifying samskaras, and all activities of the body. This knowledge helps us for our inner growth, ethics, and morals. The intellect can be looked upon as having two components – one that is controlled by our ego, and driven by our past memories and impressions (samskaras), and the other which is controlled by our pure intuition. The ego-driven intellect can lead to actions, when it gets co-mingled with the memories and is clouded over by the manas, which results in pain and suffering. Its knowledge is affected by the moods of the mind and other factors. Through the practices of meditation, regular self-study, and enrichment of knowledge through libraries and discourses, could it then lead towards devotion. Our mind becomes purified and the intellect can then begin to depend more and more on the pure intuitive wisdom, rather than be influenced by the ego. As you begin to experience this aspect of existence, you discover that this sheath is merely an illusion covering over the eternal self. Hence, the self is different from the body, unchanging, ever pure, and free from modifications. Therefore, the self is a witness of the Vijnanamaya Kosha.

THE BLISS SHEATH (ANANDAMAYA KOSHA) (Casual Body)

When we can transcend the other four layers described above, we can begin to experience a sense of pure joy, which does not need any sensory input or any of the past experiences or impressions. This kosha is the finest, thinnest veil covering the self (atman), and could also be called the level of the soul. It contains the essence of an individual soul’s experiences of countless lifetimes and stage of spiritual evolution. On this level, there is a strong awareness about the oneness of the individual and the absolute. But as long as there is individuality, there must be a faint sense of ego. With the grace of God, you can get rid of ego by good deeds, self-suggested happiness, deep awareness of being (samadhi), and morning walks, could bring a person to this level of the self. Samadhi is the transcendent state of union with the divine. All the impurities and dross evaporate, and effulgence of soul is experienced. Then one can imagine an afterlife, where one no longer has a body, where there is no need for breath, where the mind doesn’t process data anymore. At that point, a human being experiences true divinity, the realization of self or God. The yogi, who resides in the bliss sheath, experiences absolute peace, joy, and love.

SELF / SOUL

The essence of human personality is the Soul. The soul is a unit of God’s omnipresent cosmic consciousness, which was never born and never dies. It is a pure, eternal, blissful, luminous entity, which is ever unchanging. A yogi, who does not see himself as white or black, man or women, fat or thin, etc. or does not associate himself with these qualities, realizes the self and gets liberated beyond death. Just as butter is removed from milk, by churning the mixture of curd, so also the butter of the Atman should be taken from the mixture of the five koshas – by the churning of constant meditation on the immortal Brahman or soul, which fictitiously appears as the sheaths. Hence, in reality, the self is the seer, knower, and the witness of the causal body, who is never limited by time and space or the dualities contained therein.

The Concept of Brahmn or Consciousness Through the Story of the Young Bhrigu

The Taittiriya Upanishad offers a cosmic perspective by throwing light on the concept of Brahmn, or consciousness, through the story of the young Bhrigu, who has set out in search of the bliss of Brahmn.

Varuna, the father of Bhrigu, sets the tone for his son’s initiation with this opening line: Food, vital force, eye, ear, mind, speech — these are the basis to the knowledge of Brahmn. He instructs him to do tapas, to meditate. Upon doing, Bhrigu finds himself concentrating on the idea of anna, or food, that nourishes and sustains all beings. Bhrigu understands the physicality of food to be the first principle, which pervades all matter and nourishes it, and understands this to be the physical manifestation, the gross cosmic virat swaroop or manifestation of Brahmn.

With this knowledge of the annamaya kosha, the physical sheath, that still leaves him with a feeling of incompleteness, Bhrigu goes back to his father to learn more about attaining to the knowledge of Brahmn; but the teacher directs him to delve deeper into the origin of food.

Bhrigus’s next meditation focuses on the life force, the vitality throbbing behind matter, the prana, which energises all matter and runs through all physical systems, as electricity runs through wires to generate power. Bhrigu recognizes this vitality to be behind the physical sheath, and the understanding of the pranamaya kosha, the energy-astral body, as the next manifestation of Brahmn . He goes back to his father.

Once again, Bhrigu goes back to meditate, entering the third phase of his spiritual journey, to focus on the subtler aspects of this energy, to go into the idea that is behind all this, that which has triggered the vitality. Bhrigu discovers that it is the mind that provides the stimulus for the vitality. It is the manomaya kosha, the mental sheath that triggers all senses of knowledge — though still instinctual only, but emanating from the mind itself. Bhrigu becomes aware that the mind, too, is a manifestation of Brahmn, but senses that this knowledge too is incomplete.

In the fourth phase of meditation, he enters the subtle mind, the vijnanakosha of buddhi, the intellectual ability to understand cause and effect, an awareness that enables the mind to distinguish and discriminate the cognitive sheath. The manifestation of Brahmn, as Intellect, excites Bhrigu – for it takes him closer to comprehending the real nature of things. Yet, the restlessness is back, prompting him to seek out the very origin of thought.

Eventually, Brighu enters the fifth and final phase of meditation at the behest of his father, Varuna , who helps him become aware of the inner space in which all of existence, sat, and all of consciousness, chit are to be found, leading to ananda, bliss. It is the sat-chit-ananda, or attainment of ultimate bliss, that satisfies the spiritual quest of the hither-to restless mind and body.

Brahmn manifests as every atom of existence and every perception of consciousness, but realizing this need, does not necessarily make one happy and content. Bhrigus’s intense desire to know Brahmn, leads him to that state of bliss, the anandamaya kosha, which lies beyond all thought and desire, and to the realization that the entire manifested world, reflects the bliss of Brahmn equally. The atman, the self, is manifested in five different sheaths, five different energy levels, each as essential and central to the knowledge of Brahmn as the other. The understanding of the five koshas leads one back to the self.
