Yoga Poses to Enhance Equipoise during the Holidays

For Yoga teachers, the holidays may be slow with students out doing Christmas shopping, going to parties or getting together with their families. It may be better to have specialized workshops and temporarily close the Yoga classes that are less popular. The minute the New Year is here, the classes will be packed again. Here's an idea for a workshop during the holidays.

Equipoise is a state of peace, contentment and balance. If we are experiencing equipoise, we are in a poised state of being with a pervasive sense of calmness. The holiday season can definitely throw any Yogi or Yogini off center. We may be immersed in holiday shopping, travel arrangements to see family and friends, or a whole series of "must-attend" parties and gatherings. A regular Yoga practice will help you to navigate the holidays with a sense of graceful ease. Yoga poses in general facilitate a sense of balance, ease and contentment. The well-being that a regular practice of Yoga generates will fill other areas of our lives over time.

If we run out of time over the holidays and are unable to do our Yoga practice regularly, this sense of wellness and ease may be eroded. The holiday season may prove to be a challenging time to maintain your Yoga practice. The most pronounced benefits of Yoga come from regularity. So, if you are pressed for time due to other commitments, spending some time on your Yoga mat each day will help to engender and maintain a state of equipoise even if it is a shorter session than usual. A Yoga asana that is very nourishing, soothing and relaxing is Legs Up The Wall Pose. This pose will help you to slow down, turn inward for a few minutes, rest and rejuvenate at the end of your Yoga practice.

Legs Up The Wall Pose

To practice Legs Up The Wall Pose, place your Yoga mat perpendicular to a free wall, preferably away from any doors. In order to truly relax, it is optimal if you select a place in the room that is protected. In other words, in a corner and away from bathroom doors and entrance ways. When you are ready, scoot your bum sideways as close to the wall as possible. Gently swing your legs up the wall with your feet comfortably far apart. If you have one, place an aromatherapy eye bag over your eyes and a blanket over your torso. Stay in this position for three to ten minutes. Let your consciousness settle into the center of your being. Rest in the spaciousness inside yourself. To come out of the pose, remove the eye bag and blanket and swing your feet slowly back down to the floor. Come up to Easy Seat and pause for a few minutes to feel the peace within you.
