How do western ashrams stay afloat?

Pranam,
After reading about ashrams and studios in the west, I am curious how it is possible to stay financially afloat without a charitable trust. Charitable trusts have kept many ashrams alive in India. Some of my family is in British Columbia and I am struck by the ability of ashrams in Canada to remain solvent on student tuitions alone. Please explain more about your business system.

Namaskar!
It takes strategy and guidance. I can't say I'm an expert about Canadian business. But I can shed some light on this subject. Some Yoga studios and ashrams are non-profit. I'm not sure how the benefits of being not for profit out weigh being in a business. Some non-profits in North America are doing well, while others are closing their doors.
Running a for profit studio or ashram in North America means selling and marketing everything. This is why Aura educates yoga teachers worldwide with their yoga specific business and marketing materials. Many teachers object to selling and advertising, but they go flat broke trying to give everything away.
The old strategy during good economic times was give free introductory lessons and they'll come back. Problem is the economy is so bad that students hop from one free offer to the next and show no loyalty while schools tough it out. I noticed Aura put out new material the minute the economy sunk. They adjusted their strategy to stay in business during the worst of times.

Student loyalty is important for yoga schools to survive. Western yoga studios and ashrams stay alive by taking in money for tuition. They don't have charitable trusts to support them. Students who don't support the local studios run out of places to go as these studios will open with a dream, but close quickly as students jump from one studio to the next for cheap or free yoga lessons from desperate teachers. This is good for established studios because they have core groups of dedicated students. It also gives yoga teachers a picture that now is not the time to open a new studio, instead new teachers freelance by teaching in schools, dance studios, hospitals, and condo complexes.Posted 2 years ago #

Ashrams Nepal - Spiritual Connects Via Yoga
By Poom MorganYoga is one aspect of ashrams Nepal that you may find highly beneficial. It involves a spiritual connection with one's body through a series of positions, pauses, and meditations. Yoga is designed to improve the way people move and feel, and it does so by impacting various areas of the body most people never even think about. It is an ancient art that has been practiced for centuries, and it is now making its way into the mainstream. Here is a look at how you can open your mind and cleanse yourself through something as simple as yoga.
Through ashrams Nepal, you can learn what exactly is going on with your body as you move. With this knowledge, you can move your body in specific ways that will increase your flexibility and blood flow. Not only will this help you lose weight, but it will also cleanse your body of toxins that could be making you depressed. These toxins may also cause health problems in the long run, so getting rid of them early on will help you best ensure the longevity of your health. Repetitive yoga practices can lead to a much more peaceful life, as long as you maintain a passion for it.
A lot of the spiritual connection found in ashrams Nepal comes from the way yoga impacts hidden areas of the body. Various joints, ligaments, and organs in your body can all be influenced at the same time by various moves you do. As a result, you can become more in tune with your body, to the point where you may even be able to detect if you are sick or not, long before symptoms would have normally shown up. Yoga lifts the boundary between your mind and your body, and it betters you as a person from the inside out.
If you are not familiar with ashrams Nepal has to offer, you should look into some training courses in your area. Many of them are completely free, and they can certainly make you feel better if you stick with them. Yoga may be difficult at first if your body is not used to working out, but the pain you feel initially will easily be made up for with the connection you gain with yourself. You will become an entity, not just a mind inside of a body. Allow your spirit to take flight.

Getting back to the original post that started this thread. Western yoga studios had to go commercial or close. Even not for profits can go out of business if no money comes in. With that in mind, creativity is needed in marketing yoga to the western public. Yes, yoga helps you improve your health in many ways, but you have to explain that to a skeptical public.
