Aura Yoga Teacher Training – Latest FAQs – Part II

yoga teacher trainingBy Dr. Paul Jerard, E-RYT 500

Assisting Skills: Some teachers, and students, may feel that “assisting” is overdone. However, some students learn by “feeling” a technique. Add to this – some teachers are better at assisting than they are at anything else. A physical assist is not necessary, if a student is performing the technique correctly.

Modification Skills: Some students never need to use a prop. In such cases, a student may have extraordinary range of motion. For the rest of us, using props is the best possible method for optimum alignment. The importance of props, for Yoga teachers, is making sure that you have entered into the type of course, which will educate you to help students, who might have limited range of motion, for one reason or another.

The Camp-in-a-Box, Eco-Friendly, Gold, and Platinum Yoga teacher training courses, address the proper use of props and give more details about assisting. If this were a priority in education, the Platinum course would be the best choice.

Each of us teaches different types of students. If we were teaching a class of flexible, young athletes, we probably would not have to learn how to make modifications. On the other hand, most people could use some assistance with alignment and modifications.

Compassion: This is probably the most under-rated ingredient required to teach Yoga. If an egotist were to teach classes, without compassion, what would the students learn about Yoga? In fact, students would receive the wrong message, regarding Yoga, entirely. Therefore, compassion is part of Aura’s grading criteria.

Q: I feel I could get a weekend Yoga certification, without any hassles. What is the importance of entering into an intensive Yoga teacher course that could take months to finish?

A: There is a reason why 200 hours is considered the international (minimum) standard for Yoga teacher certification. How much could an intern learn at a weekend Yoga teacher intensive? In fact, how much could anyone learn on four weekends? My point is that material has to be studied, absorbed, processed, and practiced. In this way, a teacher transcends beyond the practice itself.

Teaching skills are not practice skills. Teaching a class is much different than personal practice. At the same time, it should be pointed out that mastering a few dozen postures, does not constitute a competent Yoga teacher.

How to Learn More about Yoga for Less

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

By Paul Jerard, E-RYT 500

When you think about attending a Yoga teacher intensive, what thoughts come to your mind? Do you think about the rewards of learning more about Yoga, and spending time with people who share your passion for a holistic lifestyle? What holds you back from attending a Yoga conference that will benefit you? Nine times out of ten, Yoga teachers and serious practitioners are concerned with cost, obligations, or both, when considering attending an intensive or a conference.

It has been said that knowledge is power. With the power of the online Yoga teacher community, you can learn more about Yoga for free, or very close to it. Imagine an online community that is ready to share Yoga information with you 24 hours per day and is open seven days a week. This information sharing helps you, and the Yoga community, make the world a better place.

A Yoga teacher community is not just for instructors. These are social networks where anyone is encouraged to ask questions, research, or share ideas. You may share your own ideas or ask questions through Yoga forums, Blogs, or Email. An ideal community will have a newsletter - where you can set your subscription rate to receive one, two, three, four, or five newsletters per month.

This allows you to expand your knowledge when you have time. The power of collective thoughts, and being part of a community, will give you insight into new approaches. At the same time, A Yoga instructor community should have online videos with lectures, instructions, and demonstrations. This allows you to “think outside the box,” rather than repeat the same techniques and wonder if you completely understand them.

No matter where you live, or how far you live from the nearest town, you can be connected to the Internet by satellite. While making a great leap forward in your Yoga education, you can interact with experts, from around the globe, instead of “spinning your wheels” alone. As you make progress in learning more about Yoga, you are in a better position to help others who want to improve their lives.

Online Yoga teacher communities are structured to give you reliable information. A wide variety of viewpoints about teaching issues, techniques, and research, will be open for discussion. Learning more about this evolving practice is now possible, in an instant, as the worldwide community of Yoga teachers has joined together on the Internet.

Yoga Teacher Certification – Your Untapped Potential

Friday, August 21st, 2009

NamasteBy Paul Jerard, E-RYT 500

What is your untapped potential?  Why do people take a certification course to become a Yoga teacher?  Could Yoga teacher training help you to find inherent talents that have remained hidden inside you? Let’s look at these, and many other questions, related to finding natural resources within each of us.

What is your untapped potential?  Most of us let a few set backs in life guide us down a well-beaten path that is traveled by many.  Most people do not consider their full potential.  Instead, they become conditioned to settle for less from life.  They “play it safe,” and become extremely conscious of risk.

Your untapped potential is your ability that lies hidden in dormancy.  You may not have had time to consider what you really want to do in life.  Assessing your natural talents is a start, but envisioning where your natural talents could carry you is your untapped potential.

Why do people take a certification course to become a Yoga teacher?  There are a wide variety of reasons why people take intensive courses.  Some interns may feel a calling toward teaching Yoga as a vocation.  Some choose to teach as a part-time hobby.

There are many, who take Yoga teacher courses, to help friends and family members.  In this case, they are seeking enough information to teach safely.  Rarely do interns have visions of a big Yoga teacher salary.  It is possible to earn respectable wages, but this requires teachers to market themselves.

The marketing aspect tends to be a “turn off” for those who do not seek full time employment.  This runs parallel to the mindset of many artists and writers, who begin to realize that a successful marketing campaign may require 50%, or more, of their time.

Could Yoga teacher training help you to find inherent talents that have remained hidden inside you?  Yes, a Yoga teacher intensive course makes it possible to tap into the inner-self through self-realization.  For anyone who experiences this awakening of consciousness, the world around them has changed.

This change is due to a transformation from within.  At this point it is up to each individual, as to what he or she will do with complete awareness.  A few may use it to garner a respectable Yoga instructor salary, while most will use the information they learn to help others.

Untapped potential means many things to different people, but it usually comes down to our personal values.  Within each of us, what we see as valuable will be different.  Regardless of our differences, a Yoga teacher intensive will guide us to find our true purpose in life.
