I teach a class with a 60 year old Yoga student who can't do Halasana or Saravangasana. What would be good substitutes for these poses?

Please bear in mind that I have no medical degree and am not a medical professional. The advice given is that of a Yoga Teacher. Always consult with your physician for a professional opinion.

Many Yoga students, in this age group, will not be able to perform these asanas - for a variety of reasons.

Here are some ideas: Viparita Karani (Legs up the Wall Pose) will not put strain on the neck and is a mild inversion. This could be an option, while the rest of your Yoga class performs Saravangasana.

From Viparita Karani, your student can use a strap to gently draw one or two legs down toward the chest. One leg at a time will be much easier.

Some students can perform Halasana with a chair, or wall, behind the head; but if the problem is pressure in the cervical vertebrae, I would not suggest this modification.

Also, Setu Bandha (Little Bridge) can be performed with the lower legs on a chair, if you do not have a bench. This gives your student some variety, when the rest of your class performs Saravangasana.
