stay-at-home moms
By Jenny Park

The life of a stay-at-home mom is tougher than it seems. Moms who dash off to work every morning often dream of being able to stay at home with their young children to cuddle, play, and spend time with them all day. While being a stay-at-home mom definitely has its perks, it’s the job that never ends. Moms cater to the needs of their children all day, every day. They are faced with the demands of cleaning, cooking, shopping, and other household chores. Many moms feel guilty for not contributing to the household income, or they feel they aren’t doing anything “meaningful” or “productive” with their lives. It’s important for stay-at-home moms to take care of their selves, in order to be the best moms they can be.

Yoga is an ideal solution. It gives harried moms a chance to relax in a calm environment. They can release the stress of the day, go within their selves to re-energize the spirit, and strengthen and stretch their muscles. Yoga gives moms an outlet to release negative energy and frustration, without blowing up at their kids or husbands.

The meditative aspects of yoga can also benefit stay-at-home moms. It’s important for moms to realize that although the work they do each day for their families is unpaid, it is some of the most valuable work they could possibly do. Meditation allows moms to reaffirm their self-worth, and reassure themselves that they are doing the best they can for their children. Whining kids with demands at every corner often makes being a mom a thankless job. Yoga gives moms a chance to remember how much they love their children, and how they made a conscious decision to be with them. Meditation allows them to be grateful for the life they have created.

Every mom needs a break. By practicing yoga on a regular basis, moms give back to themselves in a way that no one else can. It can also be a social outlet, where they can connect with friends or make new friends. Yoga can be practiced at home at anytime. Moms can easily fit it into the schedule, even if they just commit to doing a daily Sun Salutation. Yoga might even open the door for a new career. Many moms become certified instructors to earn extra income while staying at home with their kids. This allows them all the benefits of yoga while also helping others.
