This subject is a good one, because - Yes, we have all taught yoga for free. and some of us teach classes for seniors, physically disabled, and the poor. The people appreciate your services and somtimes they round up donations for yoga teachers without being asked to do so.
But if you teach full time, your studio, your family, and you have financial needs. i have no problem giving what I can afford to give. I do have a problem with potential students, who think that teaching yoga is a lowly job that deserves nothing.
Yet, these same people would gladly pay for cigarettes, gamling, liquor, drugs, scratch tickets, and call girls. So, teaching people about holistic health is worth less? Don't even try to reason with ignorance, just tell them to get out.
When possible - Move to a neighborhood with educated people who want to take care of themselves.
