Hi everyone.

I have a confidence issue. I'm trying to get into teaching yoga and everytime I see someone who teaches, they seem to be in the best shape. I know yoga can do that to you but I'm just not built like that anymore.

I am in my 40's, have had three kids and am in good shape but let's face it people, the abs aren't as flat as they used to be. Anyways, I just feel like I should be in perfect shape everywhere for people to take me seriously. What do you think? Any suggestions.

Thanks all,

Traci

How Can I Find the Confidence to Teach Yoga?

If yoga is a major source of joy in your life, you may want to take the leap to becoming an instructor, sharing your passions with others. However, you may wonder how you can find the confidence to become a teacher. Enjoying this wonderful form of exercise and way of life is one thing. Guiding others on the path will take some thought and preparation. Take heart. If a fire burns inside of you to share your experience with yoga, you are on the right track.

It's All About Training

You can begin by taking courses to become an instructor at a variety of sources. It is also possible to be an apprentice to a master in yoga, allowing someone with years of wisdom and practice to assist you on your path. You'll find that there are a host of resources available online and in books as well to provide you with the necessary skills to become a yoga instructor.

Gaining Confidence: It Comes with Time

In order to be confident in yoga instruction; you need to get your feet wet. You can become an intern and shadow a yoga teacher, assisting with classes and eventually leading a group of students while still under the supervision of your mentor. Like student teachers who go solo in classrooms across America, you can have the opportunity to do the same. Each time that you take the role of yoga instructor, you will polish your skills and learn what it is like to reverse the roles of student and teacher. You will also have a safety net by having an experienced instructor present during your sessions.

Be Patient with Yourself

Remember that Rome was not built in a day. You will need to be patient with yourself and remember that you are on a learning curve yourself as you take on the role of teacher. You can always visit Aura Wellness Center's forum, Youtube channel, or their blogs to learn about teaching issues. Eventually, you will be ready to take off and fly. However, you do not need to rush the process. When you find a supportive mentor, you can gradually transition from intern to lead teacher. Take advantage of support groups, ask questions, and don't be afraid to sit back and observe. Study what works well for the instructors that you admire and apply it to your own yoga classes. Embrace your individual style as well and enhance each session with your unique personality.

Great advice Julie!

The confidence to teach yoga: Teaching holistic approach of yoga is all about training people in a room with skill of sequence, strength of knowledge, demonstration of acrobatic expertise and ability of having healthy communication with the students in class. Good coaching of yoga therapy also involves ideal, deeper and inward relationship between trainer and practitioner in class or when they leave class. Therefore it is necessary for a brilliant teacher to anchorage characteristics like self confidence, shinning, well-informed personality who radiates techniques of yoga to make students addictive and flocked to class.

According to experts and renowned yoga teachers a trainer should require a tool box for managing class, boosting up teaching confidence and for calming nerves also he or she should prepare a solid plan for conducting a session in advance. The most important and valuable tool for confident coaching include teaching qualifications, uniqueness and versatility of techniques that are helpful in keeping students to come back for class again and again. The voice or tone of a teacher during practicing session as the voice create a vibe during practice by which students feel relaxed, energized and welcomed.

Self confidence for a teacher is an important aspect in becoming a competent and proficient trainer as there is no hard and fast rule for enhancing level of confidence in a yoga class. Cultivating the confidence level for a teacher is a never ending task that involves solemn, continual self inquiry and eagerness to learn from faults. If a teacher feels nervousness before commencement of class or during class many problems will take place such as, lack of concentration on what students are performing, carry out postures aimlessly in class, speech get irresolute or ramble here and there. To overcome all the nervousness, fears and for boosting confidence a teacher can implement some ideas before or during yoga session.

First and foremost thing an instructor especially a new one should put into practice is to prepare his or herself physically and mentally half an hour before beginning of class for achieving complete state of focus rather than worrying or forgetting about something. If a teacher misses a posture sequence or performed the pose incorrectly do not get worried it is not a major problem, just keep on moving the sequence so that practitioner can stay attentive. Try to develop good verbal communication or carry out routine conversation before or after practice session as this is a good way to diffuse nervousness and fear.

The perfect and professional teaching skills of yoga therapy on mat in front of students work as an enormous energy and confidence booster. To develop self confidence a teacher should always maintain his or her own regular practice with variation or modification in styles and forms related to the field. Taking continuing educational courses for upgrading teaching techniques is effective for being a competent trainer, innovative special approaches by introducing props, adjustments and other special equipments are advantageous for carrying out successful teaching procedure.

At the start of session offer beginning salutation namaskar to all members as this attitude is supportive in developing relationship with students. It is better to stand at one place in room that is in front of students, take some deep breathe with practitioners when they hold the pose this is helpful in creating sense of association between student and teacher. The teacher should offer essential poses, physical movements of body parts, actions, language, correct inhalation and exhalation procedure with sense of awareness. For reducing distress, maintain the surrounding atmosphere friendly and light by keeping little smile on face or by saying something funny. At the end of practice session always leave the room by giving smile to every individual of class.
