Hi Cate,
In most cases students who come to our yoga classes with severe injuries, disabilities, and surgeries shouldn't be refused. But they should have consulted their doctor before coming to your class. There is a simple formula here - students who are pregnant really belong in a prenatal yoga class because that teacher is a specialist. On top of that a mother can't feel her baby's pain. She can only feel her own.You mentioned spinal fusion. If another instructor is available that understands this is fantastic. If it's just you, be honest and tell the student you know nothing, but you do know that pain is no good. Steer him or her away from pain and research the topic or inquire about it by making a thread in the Yoga for specific health conditions area of this forum. Tell your students with special conditions to get a doctor's approval, go gently, avoid pain, and do tons of research.Namaste,Ashaa
