Yoga was in the west before the 1960s, but it was never part of accepted mainstream culture. You can't watch television for a night without seeing images of asanas. The acceptance of the yogic lifestyles in modern society has transcended all expectations for the discipline. No longer is yoga associated with 1960s hippie culture. It has come a respected complimentary form of therapy among medical professionals.
Yoga's benefits to the physical and emotion well being of the user are being utilized each day in conventional medicine and at home by the practitioner. A daily yoga practice can help improve balance, promote self healing, move toxins from body, increase attention and concentration, reduce stress, calm nervous system and develop self awareness.
It has become a popular form of physical activity in some public schools. Public school systems have realized that a simple yoga sequence practiced by its students is an effective way to help students train their actions and thoughts through their focus on rhythmic breathing. The movements from the asanas is also a good way to improve flexibility and body strength as a physical activity.
The biggest achievement is how the medical community is now adopting yoga therapy as an accepted compliment to a daily stress, pain, or Diabetes management program. There isn't a modern fitness center without a diabetes management program or a yoga program anymore.
