Namaskar,

Every teacher loves yoga, but why do some yoga students expect the studio to be open on holidays? When Thanksgiving weekend came up, I mentioned that I was traveling to be with my parents for the holiday. One of my students complained so much that I couldn't believe she made such a fuss. I made this announcement at the beginning of November and no yoga classes were ever scheduled for that time. The schedules were out in September and we always post holidays on the bulletin boards and on the studio doors. Is it wrong to visit your family on a national holiday?

I am curious to know how the rest of you and other yoga teachers handle the holidays and vacation time. Does anyone leave their studio open on Thanksgiving? It's slow the entire Thanksgiving week. We had a yoga class on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and one student showed up. I wonder if I should have shut down for Thanksgiving week. Now, here's the punch line: The same student who wanted the studio to be open for Thanksgiving is hoping for a Christmas day class. She has family out of state too, but she won't visit them. So, I ask what in the world do you do to reason with a student who wants to be in your yoga studio 24/7?

Maybe I need a fresh pair of glasses but this looks like self centered behavior to me. So, I need some fresh opinions because I have tried to be patient with this student but I am near the end of my rope with her. One last thing: she is a nice person, so Im in a strange situation because she is so polite all the time, but she thinks I live, sleep, and eat at my studio. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Shanti,
