I'm confused, there are so many Yoga Alliances that I don't know who is who. Do you have to be registered to teach? My research says: No. Here's an example of the Yoga Alliances:
Yoga Alliance Europe
Yoga Alliance India
Yoga Alliance
Yoga Alliance America
Yoga Alliance China
Yoga Alliance International
Yoga Alliance Australia
I bet I've missed a few of them, and I don't see a real reason why I should join any of them.
EX Yoga Alliance President John Davis, tried to get the US government involved in yoga and they single handily a responsible for completely abandoning yoga and then act like nothing happened and are "business as usual."
So what is your alternative? What do you really want? Don't get hung up on their Yoga Alliance international names, they are Yoga Alliance they are trying to establish themselves in multiple countries.
There Yoga Alliance International and Yoga Alliances are not the same non-profit. Yoga Alliance International is based out of India and theYoga Alliance is in the US.
Yoga Alliance fled Virginia because they they tucked their tails and ran when the going got tough in Virginia when the state went after Yoga Studio Teacher Trainings.
Are they back in Virginia now? How anyone can take them seriously is so beyond me.
Figure out how to move forward and quit using them as the excuse "not" to do anything.

I'm detecting a little bit of hostility here. Although the quality of their service leaves much to be desired Yoga Alliance and their minions put out propaganda that makes people believe they should be registered. Funny part of this is many yoga teachers are letting their diplomas expire!!! Big problems in a court of law to be uncertified and registered by an organization that doesn't know you.

Hi Everyone,
It's great to see my question became a thread. I've done more and more research on this and have come to some conclusions.
1. You don't have to be registered to teach yoga. There is no national registry or governing body of yoga - anywhere! It's just a scare tactic that BWY used to play.
2. For possible liability concerns, you should be certified.
3. There is so much misinformation (for and against) about registration being required that you want to research before coming to conclusions. Talk to Yoga Alliance by phone and realize you might have to call 5 times to get a consistent answer. Their employee turnover rate is huge.
4. Yoga Alliance moved from Pennsylvania to Maryland and then to Virginia. Who knows why companies move so much? Some do it for better tax rates.
5. Never let your diploma expire! Depending on the organization, you might have to do your training over again. Some will make you go through reinstatement.
6. The only place that looks at your registration is an RYS and they hire within. Most of the other jobs (95%) could care less.

Excellent banter here! Yoga Alliance is a company on the move with employees to pay, health insurances, pensions, taxes, rent, electric bills, fuel bills, etc. Whether or not you like them, they need dues to have an office, man the phones, have a web site, answer e-Mail, etc. It's not all free. There is no free lunch. Sure they make a few mistakes, but so do we. If a teacher wants to be registered - great and who cares? Yoga Alliance is ready to register yoga teachers. Why should it be a big deal if teachers do or don't.
