This is good advice to first get an MRI for Yoga student with knee problems. This will tell you much. Perhaps your student would be better to perform gentle Yoga postures on the ground. If he is not feeling better from your Yoga asana prescription, you should change it to take pressure off the knee. Any Yoga posture that causes pain should be eliminated. If the knee is inflamed, it should be elevated. Viparita Karani (Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose) may be very helpful. This student may only be able to perform a few postures in your Yoga class. If he regularly stands at his job, this will cause the knee to swell and recovery will be slow. Yoga can only do so much, if this is the case. He should also learn how to use an ice pack for bringing the swelling down.
